Default First gear issues

Just acquired a 2007 FXD. It’s my first HD and my first bike of any kind in almost 20 years. Bike has 8500 miles on it. My question is regarding a slip or “jolt” I’m getting in first gear. It takes off fine. But, when I twist the throttle with anything more than a feather touch, it feels like what I would describe as slipping. It’s a firm jolt and it does it repeatedly until I shift to 2nd. From 2nd gear on it runs perfect. The guy I bought it from said he had it set up this way intentionally because he “is a small guy and the bike had too much power at take off”. I call complete BS on that one. But anybody know what my problem could be and what to do about it? Thanks.

Sounds like your clutch needs adjustment. Slipping would be most noticeable in first, that's where the most torque is required.

So you don’t believe it’s a major problem? Having the clutch adjusted should fix it?

I'd try adjusting my clutch first too. This thread makes it real easy.

Yup! Top gear puts the greatest load on the clutch. First puts the greatest load on the final drive and the least load on the clutch.

Could it be the belt skipping?

I adjusted the clutch today. Followed the directions in that link and even watch a couple of YouTube videos. Didn’t fix it. I may have to just take to the shop. How can I check to see if the belt is slipping? I’m still puzzled on why the guy said he had it set up that way on purpose. It’s maddening when riding it.

Can you ask the guy what he means by "set up"?

Check the belt tension. Push up on the belt with your finger midway between the sprockets. It should take quite a bit of force (~10 lbs) to push it about 3/8". (There's a gauge on the lower belt guard.) Also, inspect the entire length of the belt for damaged teeth.

The 'guy' is hiding something... a firm jolt only in 1st? ... I'd be leery of a broken tooth on 1st gear. Anything on a part outside of the tranny should show itself no matter what gear your in.
