One sign of too lean is small metal flakes on the spark plug tip. These would be from the top of your piston.

You can't really go by plug color anymore. My last 2 bikes plugs were pure white when I changed them. The fuel now days is different. To properly read a plug, you have to look at a lot of different things, like the electrode and the ground strap. I don't remember what exactly to look for on those, but I imagine you can google it and find some info.
These bikes already run pretty lean from the factory, and that does'nt help with plug reading.

People will tell you that it should be a light tan.
One bike I had the plug was off-white and another bike I had the plug was tan.

mine are white with a dark thin ring midway down... you do not want them black(rich) or having a light brown glassy deposit (too lean).

from the service manual: a plug with white, yellow ,tan, or rusty brown powdery deposit indicates balanced combustion.
