actually whoever did the service should have known not to use three full quarts of oil. But now at least you know for sure!

You had to drain out the excess oil?
In any event, it sounds like the "tech' didn't follow the basic instructions on changing the oil, got lazy and just put in 3 qts. The manual states to put 2 qts in, then perform a 'hot' check, which is how you're supposed to check the oil under all circumstances.
What's even worse is, it sounds like at least a large portion of the service dept was there and agreed that 3qts is what should have been put in. That means none of them even know how to change the oil on the freakin bikes they sell and work on.
I'd grab the service manual and go pay a visit to the service mgr. Especially if you had to drain oil out when you got home, I'd demand a refund, and then I wouldn't bring my bike back there.
One of the most basic, most performed, and easiest tasks to perform on a bike, and the entire service dept doesn't know how to do it.
Scary....
Might want to inform fellow riders who live in the same area.
BTW..you might wanna edit the title of the thread... You're going to make people think there's something wrong with their bike, when there's not.

If they drained 3 qts without removing the oil filter they have too much oil in it since the filter does not drain by itself.

This is also why most of us do our own service work.

I was thinking I should change the title of the thread after the first reply but do not know how. I think I'll change it to "How to be an idiot" or "I should just change my own oil"
