I started to have a problem on my 06 SB at about 6,000 miles but my dealer said that he didn't hear anything. I had to replace it at 20,000 miles and by then I was out of warrantee. Then at 22,000 miles it started again. I now have 24,000 miles and, thanks to this forum, HD is replacing it right now with a complete 07 setup at no charge.

I don't have a number but the dealer tells me that they have upgraded the bearing. They are also replacing the inter primary and the transmission housing.

Hey Mole Rat what dealer is this? So I know where to go when
and if mine goes. Mine looks to be built June of 06 and I've got
about 10,000. What are the symptoms of a IPB failure? Will I make tot home? Or will I need to call the tow truck?
Thanks.

06 Lowrider...IPB went at 11,500. Had the pink paper from Harley saying that it was a known issue and my dealer fixed it for free. We will see what happens in the next few thousand miles though.

The symptoms start out as a whirring/growling sound in the primary. The easy way to verify it is going is to drop it into gear and see if the noise stops. If it stops the IPB is the source of the noise. It happens gradually from what I understand but the longer it goes the more chance of other damage.

Build Date 06/2006
FXDBI streetbob

How many IPB failures? NONE
I did however open the primay at 5400miles and found my inner case doweled (4 dowels I believe it was). IPB and race appeared normal, yanked bearin and put in new hd ipb (wish I would of saw this baker you guys put in).
Inspected stator/rotor, rotor was 8 bolt design, with one bolt backing out, yanked rotor and stator, put in HD upgraded welded rotor and stator.

So I didn't have a failure but I've done the repair once now, I hope I won't have issues down the road but I'm encouraged with the dowelled case that I shouldn't have to deal with it later.

Good for you bro, but I had to chuckle at that part, when I had my bearing replaced down there 3 months ago, everybody was shocked, and never heard of this IPB failure, in fact Tech even told me "Hell what do I know, I just work on the things for a livin", more or less trying to make me look like a fool. Then when he put the clip in wrong and blocked the oil passage, I had to go back down there and make the service manger look like a fool.
Anyway, hopefully they took no shortcuts on yours....
