According to motorphilosophy.org:

Supposedly, a green painted motorcycle is bad luck. The legend has it that the Harleys used in World War II were often sitting duck targets, and many military riders got their butts blasted off them. And since they were painted Army green, it eventually translated into modern folklore.

I have been riding since the 60s and back then there was a real battle going on between the British bikes, many Triumph, and Harley. Triumphs were often green so it was always my understanding that was how it got started.

Heard the same bad luck story from a bud in Baltimore 20 years ago. I've seen some good looking green bikes and don't put much creedence in it. Of course I don't own one either.

It's what I've always heard.
The gremlin bells are supposed to be bad luck too.

I heard about a lot about bad luck and green bikes back in the 50's but not much since. Never anything about gremlin bells being bad luck.

I hope this means that black bikes are good luck. Has anyone had bad luck with a black bike? Since there are so many, it could be the start of a new superstition.

I've had 5 green Harleys (out of 14 so far) since 1982. My favorite color for a bike.
From Shovelheads to Softails to Road Kings, I always keep at least 1 in the garage. Here's a couple of mine.

Green is only bad if you think it's bad. They used to say that about race cars and just about anything else. I never dumped a green bike but I have dropped black, tan, blue, red, and some that I never knew what color they were.
