will high heat spray paint hold up on Rocker Covers?
My Rocker covers on my 2007 Dyna are aluminum and I really dont like them because they are to hard to keep up unlike chrome. Im thinking about taking them off and spraying them with high heat spray paint in black. Will this work? and hold up....
Also: if i take off the covers will the gasket break or is it reuseable |
I called the powder coat people and they want $150 to do it,Im not spending that much on them

If you prepped the surface well and used a quality automotive engine paint I would think that it would be durable. Unsure about the gasket

There are basically two grades of high heat paint the 350-500 degree kind and the 1200-1300 degree kind, guess which one you need.Get the best high heat paint you can afford and follow the instructions on the can to the letter.Pay special attention to the curing instructions and you should be fine.

The best paint would VHT header paint. I think you can get from Jeg's.

I just read about a spray paint for wood burning stoves, it was a brand called thurmalux. Its supposed to be very good
|
... and replace the gaskets...
|
as said above as long as you prep and follow inst you will have no probs I did mine and put lots of miles on them and still look great

I would use Dupli-color engine paint or VHT (both made by same mfg) Header paint is over kill plus it would be a pain to properly cure it. If your rockers reach over 500* you have more important things to worry about than the paint on your rockers! See the curing procedures below.
Curing FlameProof™ VHT FlameProof™ Coating only attains its unique properties after correct curing (refer to instructions on the can). On the Vehicle
Curing Engine Enamel VHT Engine Enamel only attains its unique properties after correct curing.

I reccomend the john deere tractor muffler paint in black. Works great but do the process above

Send Joe (JRK aka powderpros) He has a Rocker box swap deal you can do through him with them wrinkle to match the rest of the motor. Or whatever color you want. Not sure of the price, but he'll do it right the first time and not screw it up like my local powder coaters did to my apes.
For the rockers removal and install this should help!! https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...ll-w-pics.html |
I would love to send my stuff to joe, however id pay a bloody fortune for shipping to and from canada. ive got a coater lined up to do my rockers, heat shields and various other parts. How hot do these things get? the coater said they would be fine upto 400 degrees because thats what they cure at, so again, how hot do these things get? should i be concerned?

Mine are painted with Krylon BBQ black. Krylon BBQ black has a nice satin finish, unlike Rustolium which is ultra flat. I painted my rocker covers 2 yrs. ago and the Krylon has held up just fine.

Rocker covers are small enough to fit into your old lady's stove if you want to give one of those cheap Harbor Freight powder coat systems a go. I know they say not to use a stove you also put food into, but hey, well, you know . . . LOL!

regular powder is just fine, as long as you do not use white or some light color

If I can recommend. Eastwood diamond clear when your finished with the color. Their spray prep is great for cleaning it before you paint. And use an adhesive promoter no matter what brand of paint you use. I took off the original factory clear on my 84 and used Eastwood clear on everything years ago and it held up for years. I sold the bike 12 years later. I kind of miss the old polished aluminum look.
