I was poking around the HD dealer in San Marcos today when I saw that trim ring on the rack (74541-00). I grabbed one and headed for Home Depot, where I picked up a can of Rustoleum Fine Texture Black.
I scuffed it up with some 600 grit wet/dry paper, 2 light coats with self-etching primer, and put 3 light coats of the texture black.
I'm really pleased with the results. There's a tad more sheen in the ring, but I expect that will subside as it cures. Nice little mod for under $25.
Thanks for the idea jmeiers. No more sun glare from that chrome ring.

I just talked with my parts guy, and he has one of these. I just wanted to make sure that you are able to PC this particular part number.

So I know why my gauges stuck out to me so bad. I ALREADY had these trim rings on my gauges. I guess the PO put them on their along with every other chrome doo dad the MoCo sold.
Anyways I utilized my quick detatch wiring setup and removed the gauges from the bike. Removed the old trim rings carefully, and cleaned off all the sticky tape. Then i gave em a SOS pad cleaning and they are ready for powder coating.
So I have never taken a set of these gauges out of their buckets. Any tips I should know? It looks like I remove the 2 screws from the back and they should come apart. Remove the indicator light panel and all of this is ready for powder coat as well.
Here is a pic of my wiring setup.
The chrome rings pulled some black paint off the original gauge trim
