The HD simple Stage 1 download is only about $150. And is the best way to go until you get ready for bigger and better things. ----$0.02

Piggybacks are POS. But thats just my opinnion. You have a "smart" ECM. Use it.

Here's my opinion, and I just went through this whole process myself recently... and did a lot of research (mostly on this site) and asking a few reputable shops before finalizing what I wanted to do:

For just a pipe (like most have said) no need for a tune/remap, even if you replace the stock filter with a K&N. You should be fine, as one v-twin mechainc told me, "if you are just upgrading one side of the airflow it (mapping) won't need to be changed, both and you will".

He additionally said "a good way to tell if you are a little lean is to take the bike up to about 70 and roll off the throttle and if there is no back fire you are ok".

I don't think just changing the stock air filter for a K&N filter is going to yield you near as much as "stage 1" replacement air cleaner system will, so basically you are only talking one side of the equation and should be fine.

PS- For what it's worth...I am extremely happy with my stage 1 mods (see sig), installs were pretty straight forward and the bike runs great!

I read this: "I'm putting a K&N stock replacement filter on the bike".

To me that is not doing "both".

Unless I misread it he said he is just putting in a stock replacement K&N filter.

Get a set of VIEDs or XIEDS
Keeps your o2 sensors

I am running vance and hines big shots, nothing else done. I had a pinging at 5 the gear when I got on the throttle. After VIEDs no more pinging and motor runs cooler, and The VIEDs are adjustable.

Ya but he also said he already has the V & H exhaust - ?

I just got an 07 fxdb. It came with 2 into 2 V&H exhaust.
