Lugging ?

I understand "Lugging" as being a no no both during break-in and afterwards. Thats no problem and is easily avoided as my bike has a transmission ;).

Out of curiosity, just what harm does "Lugging" do ? Thanx.

It's running the engine at a low engine speed, relative to the road speed, which subjects the engine internals to undue loads and stress. Most likely victim IMHO is the crankshaft, especially the big-end bearings, but the pistons will get rattled around in the cylinders and damage of various sorts could afflict all the major components.

Understood grbrown, and thanx. I've followed the dealer's advice not to "Lug" but didn't really understand why. I stay above 2000 rpm unless I'm below 3rd gear and don't punch it unless I'm above 2500.

It's partly about getting maximum life out of the engine and trans! Also we only have two cylinders, so our engines are not going to take too kindly to being run as if they have eight!
