Default Hard Cranking

It's been a while since I posted here. Hope someone can give me some info and suggestions.

I have a 1992 Heritage Softail Classic with the 1340cc. Has Vance and Hines pipes, Andrews ev27 cam, and the stock carb has been jetted. Did this work about 4 years ago and it runs great! Recently I have noticed that when starting cold, it acts like the timing is way advanced and actually will try to lock up. If I push the enriching valve in, it cranks smooth.

It's gotten to the point that it is very difficult to start cold. Used to fire right up.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Does it pop out the carb without the enrichener on?

Responded once but apparently didn't take.

No. It cranks normal and tries to fire but is too lean.

This causes me to want to ask about cranking speed.
Cold temps and a weak battery has caused me starting problems, even here in Texas.

With the enrichment in it cranks fast. Pull it out and it acts like the compression went up.

Just throwing stuff out. We had a PC5 hooked up at a time and it caused a symptom as you describe. Are you running any kind of a module or such?

When we unhooked the module the starting got much better.

Clean/rebuild the carb.

First thing I'd do is run through the charging system diagnosis steps in Dr. Hess' sticky. Only takes a few minutes.

I have had that same issue in colder temps, 30's and 40's with my S&S carb. When it gets that cool everything is tighter, cranks slower and the addition of the enricher slows it down even more and ends up with too much fuel in the motor. When this happens do not use the enricher. I just give 2 twists of the throttle. She'll turn over faster and fire better... Still might want to check the timing as well...

Don't over look the dreaded intake seals leaking and pulling air before the carb.
