Man if you're gonna work on your own bike you need a factory service manual for your bike.
It will tell you exactly how to do whatever you want to do to your bike.

These Ignitionswitch is also build in on my 1995.
In the Servicemanual on page 503 you see how to disassemble the Switch.
How to do the rest ist from page 500 up.

blumi, links like that are not allowed under HDF rules. H-D doesn't produce digital copies of their manuals, so they are counterfeit.

I would replace the stock handlebar riser bushings with a new pair of urethane ones then adjust the handlebars. I bet your handlebar bushings are worn out.

IDK about your 97, but on my 04 it was not a quick job.
