Default Buying an older bike

Would you advise against buying a 1993 Fat Boy. I realise the old model still works on a choke, but the bike is in an immaculate condition? Any inputs

You're going to have to be more specific.

What is it you're concerned about?

In general, I'll say this: There are those of us who are huge fans of Evo-era carb'd bikes. They are fabulous.

OTOH, if you're the kind of guy who's looking for fuel injection and ABS and other techno stuff, they aren't for you.

Picts?
Price??

Depending on what they want for it I would say buy it.
FWIW I wouldn't buy anything newer than '95 but that's just me.

Thank you for the reply. I am a girl and I am not macho.

I am more concerned about electrical problems, engine issues. Things I should be concerned about when buying an older model. Would it be a better option to buy a 2004 Heritage Softale? I am moving up from a 1200 Sportster.

It is R90 000,00 (South African currency) so approximately 6000 dollars.

In South Africa its a reasonably good price

Having a choke has nothing to do with it. I would take a carburetor engine over fuel injection any day. Simpler design, easier to work on. '93 wasn't a bad year for softails. If it looks good, runs good and the price is right you should be alright. I've got a 1993 Heritage Classic that I picked up a year or so ago and it's been great other than a shock replacement fiasco I had. But that was more because of the shop, not the bike.

If ya buy it be sure to post pics. Oh, of the bike too.

If the bike lived in a dry climate, I wouldn't worry to much about the wiring and switches. The primary and trans upgrades are the best in the Evo class.... Motor is pretty much bullet proof... What's the milage? Not knowing the market down there but 6k is not unheard-of... Great bike. Less problems than the 04 TC Heritage.... Post some pics if you can.... You might even be able to get it for less.... If so I would think it's a good deal...

I don't know about the South Africa market but $6,000 over here is waaaay to much. I only paid like $4,500 for the Heritage Classic over a year ago and my bike was immaculate.

And welcome to the board by the way.

Sooner or later you'll need service or repair. Can you do it yourself? Check for a local shop in your area and talk to them before buying. Possibly have them give it a once over?

The EVO is a better motor IMO because it is the most dependable motor put out so far (M8 hasn't been out long enough to rate yet).

As for electrical problems any used vehicle could have problems but the most common ones are easily fixed.

When buying any used vehicle look for leaks.
Does the previous owner have any maintenance records?

If you aren't mechanically inclined you can have an indy check out the bike and let you know if they find anything wrong with it.

The price seems high for the states but I understand that Harleys cost more over seas so it might be ok (I'm not familiar with prices in your country).

Just to be clear the '04 Heritage has way more negatives motor wise than the EVO!!!
