Default New Torrington bearing: Do I need to pack it with grease?

I'm going to replace pushrods, lifters and the inner cam bearing, I ordered a Torrington / timken / koyo. It came in a sealed plastic bag with some sort of clear grease already on it. Is that just to keep it from rusting or do these bearings come greased up and ready to install from the factory? If I need to pack it what grease are you supposed to use? Thank you

Doesn’t motor oil provide the necessary lubricant?

Never pack an engine bearing with grease.

Motor oil...

Used Lubriplate #105 rebuilding engines for years.

Then got to using motor oil and STP additive ( motor honey was another name) Lots of different idea's and answers for your question.

Bottom line motor oil will do just Fine.

You should use oil, but I really recommend getting a tube of permatex assembly lube. The good stuff.

I've never had to do it but I seem to remember this came up not too long ago. I think what you need to do is clean all of that old grease out of the bearing then lube it with either assembly oil or motor oil. Do a little snooping around and see what you can find. The grease is likely in there to prevent rust. I like to clean bearings with kerosene as it is non corrosive.

Great thanks for the help guys. Any other tips for installing the other stuff? I heard its a good idea to soak the lifters in oil before the install, and I need to let them bleed down between turning the engine to do the pushrods
