Default 1990 top end rebuild

So I'm thinking I need to do some top end work on my ultra.
it smokes a little at idle .Uses about a qt of oil in 1200 miles, doesn't leak but a drop or two, and the top of the rear piston always look oily .Also, a good amount of carbon on the intake valves.
and a rattle from the top end, that is driving me nuts.
it doesn't smoke nearly as much at idle after a valve adjustment.
is this fairly straight forward? New guides, valves, and seats for the heads..rering for pistons?

Any special tools for the valve seat install?
had a hell of a time finding a local machine shop to do my ironhead top end last winter, and dont want to go through that again with this evo.

Or should i send then off some place?
does anyone offer an exchange for heads?

Valve adjustment? This is an Evo motor?

Yes, replacing valve seats requires specialized machinery.

You can send the whole business off to Hillside if you can't find someone local.

Depending on what cam you're running I'd ditch those and go back to OEM solid pushrods. JMO

Sounds like you have investigated into your oil consumption a bit. Have you taken a compression test or leak down test to give you more information. After that, you'll be able to know for sure. What is the mileage of your bike? How much do you want to spend and how much are you going to do yourself? Could be a big difference in $$ spent.

Compression is 180 in both cylinders.
I dont have a way to test leak down, but i have left the compression tester hooked up for 30 minutes on each cylinder with no drop in psi, or at least that showed on my gauge.
I'm comfortable doing any work that i can do on my own, but I don't have any way to do any machine work on my own.
as for mileage of the bike...no idea. Odometer shows 32xxx now, I was told the 29k miles showing when i bought it was accurate, and title reflected that. But I still don't know for sure, can only go by what i was told.

Plenty of places to send the jugs off to for boring and new pistons. Stock compression pistons and boring is pretty reasonable. If 32k miles is correct I doubt you need much if any valve work done.

180 psi nr compression test tells me some one was in the motor. Stock is usually 160 or less.. seeing that they are that hi and equal I would think just a valve job would be in order here. 1 qt to1200 miles sounds like valve seals and not rings. However a leak down test would confirm.. Any local Indy could perform a decent valve job..

One more thing. You're compression tester has a shrader valve in it, that's why it didn't detect any cylinder leakage.. you can rent a leak down tester from most auto parts stores...

Someone has been in it before, I was able to talk to a service department around the area the bike was bought new, said they had something in the computer about the cases being split, and complete gasket set, but it didnt have any other detail as to what was done. That was in 1993, and the place had switched computer systems and names a few times. Plus with the adjustable push rods, and the timer has been out and marked up some with timing marks. So....who knows.
I'll try to track down a leak down tester and see what i can get done with that

With that compression reading and relatively low mileage, I'd be very surprised if you needed any more than valve seals. Left alone, an Evo will last longer than you would ever expect.
