Default Did I do something wrong?

I have a 96 heritage 45,000mi and changed the oil this morning.
Got plug secured put some oil in filter and replaced it.
Noticed on the 3rd quart of the refill that the tank was pretty close to full so down off the jack and rode about 10 miles round trip and the tank is still almost up to the neck full.
HD manual says 4 quarts for a change but I still have 12ounces left in the 3rd quart + the 4th quart with no place to put it.
I don't remember having this issue before.
Any ideas?

Did you warm the bike up prior to changing the oil?

Warmed it up to 150 or so before draining and left it sitting level on jack while draining. It was only dripping every 4/5 seconds when I pulled the pan and put the plug back in.

I will admit I didn't get 4 quarts out of it but didn't expect to since it blows by the dip stick almost since the last oil change.

Unless you try and flush the old oil out of the engine cases then you will never use more than 2.5 quarts.
Since you have 12 oz left in the 3rd bottle I would say your over filled.

As for what to do with the oil remaining in the 3rd and 4th quarts put it on a shelf until the next oil change.

So I'm about 4oz over full huh?
Wonder if that's why it's blowing out the dip stick or do I just need a new one?
The one I have has a temp gauge on it and to be honest I've never been sure where if there are any marks on it to tell how full it is.

I have an '06 with the 88 Cuin motor and an '08 with the 96 Cuin motor and once they are drained and filter is changed I still have oil in the motor (about a quart). I end up only putting about 3 quarts a couple of buddies are using oil scavengers to remove the extra old oil in the motor. I am actually thinking of using this on my bikes soon as a way to replace all of the oil. Below is a video of it being used.

Are you you guys really going that over due on oil changes, that you are worried about that last quart of oil? When you are running it with the scavenger, is any oil making it to the engine? Just because the oil is black doesn’t mean it’s dirty or broken down, color is no indication of oil condition. Use a good quality oil and change it regularly, don’t wast your time or money on any extra gimmicks. The only time I see this as a good idea would be after a major engine failure, but if you really want to get rid of all the old oil, buy double the oil and filters. Change the oil and filter, run it up to temp and then change them again. At least that way your not pumping oil into a container instead of the engine, potentially causing more harm then good.
