In my opinion, you can get a good improvement in performance without breaking the bank, and create power where you need it most.

Frankly, some of these "don't bother" comments are depressing and seem devoid of any joy.

A lot of times, lackluster performance on used bikes is caused by the previous owner removing baffles from the exhaust system. Check to see if that is what happened to this bike. If so, then give the folks at Big City a Thunder a call and they will fix you up.

 

Here is what I had done to my 95 Heritage two years ago. It certainly isn't a slug. I certainly don't feel like I wasted my time or money. This build is not to win races. It is to give good performance in all rpm ranges, with emphasis on torque in the low to mid rpm range which is where you need it the most in realistic riding.

Its still stock mufflers. I have decided to start with and ordered a Stage 1 big sucker because i like the way how it vents the heads and was reasonable in price and can still use the flying wheel cover. Probably go with a set of SE slipons and just rejet the carb for that, will also check that sensor behind the oil filter. I took the cover off the air breather and its a wonder it even runs with the stock element..

 

I have a friend that has a set he bought for his Ultra but didn't use them.
If you are interested he wants $100 for them.


To be completely honest I don't know enough about baggers to be sure if they will fit or not on your bike but I think they will.

My 95 RK was a slug too, even with slip-ons and K&N air filter element in the stock cover with free-flow backplate.
A CV Performance carb kit helped a bit but not a great deal.
Andrews EV13 cam (and a new set of lifters) transformed it into a whole different bike. Has some real get up and go through the range now. Whereas, before I would crack the throttle on a uphill run with a passenger and it would just sit there chugging away at the same speed. Now it hauls *** like it should. Best power gain per dollar I know of.

I think the later model Evo stock cams were a performance disaster brought on by EPA rules. From memory, the late stock cams have zero overlap so they simply are not going to perform no matter what. They were purely to get through emmissions and noise tests.
