I'm about fed up

I love her, but I'm about to the point of letting her go....

98 RK Classic with efi, V&H Large Ovals (no baffles), TFI fuel controls (yes, they're junk)...

Bike shut down on me one day about 2 months ago. Pulled over & she fired off & no more issues. Few days later, had my SA pick her up & supposed to ride her in for my wedding. She quit about 1/2 mile from my house & hasn't run right since.
I unhooked TFI module to rule it out 1st. She idled for few minutes then died. Was getting intermittent fire. Changed Cam Position Sensor (it was black & oozing), added Andrews EV-27, adjusted push rods to be able to spin by hand at TDC compression stroke, but still not right. Was super hot, like really really lean, but plugs aren't white, they're black with build up. Hooked up TFI, tried again & she quit on me altogether. Noticed fuel pump wasn't priming at turn of ignition, so pulled tank console & checked it for 12v. At initial turn of switch, got a flash of 12v, then nothing. Thinking crank position sensor, so ordered a new one (total PITA finding one). Got it today & installed. Still super hot, but had TFI unhooked at 1st to test start. Ran for maybe a minute & died. Hooked TFI back up & tinkered with settings while trying to keep bike running, she's running rough & doesn't want to idle at all.
What the heck am I missing here???

Cylinder heat temp sensor? Intake air temp sensor? Did you check the computer for codes?

I feel your pain. I had a 1998 Ultra efi that just would not run right. I replaced the cam position sensor, then the engine temp sensor in the head and still it would run rough and HOT. I took it to an indy that had the scanalyzer (unsure of spelling) tool. He hooked it up and there was no data on the ecm.

I bit the bullet and bought an S&S Super E off of ebay as well as the Pingel petcock and adapter, a new coil, and and Ultima programmable ignition. I was in under a grand and when I was finished, the bike ran fantastic.

If I were to buy another evo that was EFI, I would figure the price of the carb conversion into what I would pay for the bike.

I'm not suggesting that this is your only option, but it worked for me.

Sounds like the temp sensor. Search the EVO section for EFI Temp sensor, a ton of good help here. I'm running an old Doebeck TFI myself, finicky but it gets me down the road pretty well.

I've searched & looked everywhere I can think of, but can't find anywhere that tells you how to read the codes or even get them on the older bikes. Everything ive found is 2000 or newer.

Funny, I've used search feature & couldn't ever find the info I was looking for on reading codes. Tried Yahoo searches & nothing. Just tried Google search (because I'm bored at work & it's killin me not having the bike) & low & behold I stumbled across this little gem...

Do you have the Factory Service Manual???

ER-Thumper Aug 15, 2017 06:51 AM

No, I bought a cd off eBay a couple years ago that's similar to a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual.

I just pulled the code. It's 32, guessing that's rear injector? I'll check the book (computer) later to verify, unless someone has a better answer or solution

rockhousebadboy Aug 15, 2017 07:42 AM

That could be an old code... my 97 would throw that code when I was chasing a problem that ended up being engine temp sensor and later figured out cam sensor was bad. Since you changed cam sensor and crank sensor I would pull battery cable and reset ecm and then run the bike again and pull codes. Don't think I have ever saw a post on here where someone with an MM system had a bad injector. My ets never did throw the ets code. You can check it with an ohms meter. I used the ohms meter to check mine with the book and then put a hair dryer to it and watched the meter. t
The readings where very erratic instard of a smooth up and down like the new one did. A factory service manual is a must have for the bikes imho. There is a good video on YouTube on adjusting the throttle position sensor. Might need to do that before adjusting the idle.

Your bike is telling you something. Maybe the wedding?

In all seriousness, sounds like a ground to me. Like the headlamp groud or something equally unusual.
