My bike showing stock "N" cam in correct position. Looks about the same as yours, OP.

I pulled the cam, I got lucky and had the gear pressed on in the right place! I might be +-2 degrees because I was eyeballing it and didn't have an alignment tool but it looks like the cam is aligned properly on the gear.

I buttoned everything back up but instead of adjusting the pushrods 24 flats I did 16. Turned the engine by the rear wheel by hand, still got hissing/sneezing out the carb. Did a compression test, got 130/130 psi. Fuuuuuuuuuu.... Before starting this project compression was 170/165 front/rear. I thought maybe the engine was cold and warming it up would help. Started her up and the bike actually ran pretty smooth. Took it around the block and tested it again, F. Still 130/130.

Its because I didnt adjust the pushrod out enough, isnt it? Or did I maybe bend a valve?

Just a thought. Did you have the throttle wide open while doing compression test??
My 97 would show about 130 if I didn't hold the throttle wide open during test.

I put everything back together, turned the pushrods 24 flats while the valves were closed, waited for them to bleed down properly between doing each cyclinder... Thought I was good to go.

I put the bike in 5th gear and turned the engine from the rear wheel with the spark plugs removed. Instead of hearing a "chug" out of the spark plug holes, I'm getting a long, loud hissing out of the carb. Where did I go wrong?? Does this mean the intake vales are open during the compression stroke?
Just curious as to why you didnt just install the cam as is ? I installed the same on my 86 and was told to just put it in.It runs great .

+1 on that ^

And you really don't "have" to prop open the diaphragm slide, just hold the twist grip well over 1/2 throttle. It'll let enough air by to get a decent reading. Also, different cams WILL give you different static compression readings. That has to do with the difference in lobe "overlap."

You installed an Andrews 27, what cam did you take out? Stock?

This. different cams WILL give different cranking compression readings. Longer overlap on performance cams will do this. This is why off idle power can suffer with performance cams, and why builders mill the heads to compensate for compression loss at low speeds.

With those compression numbers, almost certainly not. I'm sure you're fine.
