Has My Dyna Had The Cams Replaced?

So I'm new to Big Twins, only owned the Dyna since December. Other Harley's are Sportsters.

I was looking at the Low Rider the other day and notice the Push Rod tubes seem to be 2 piece. My Sportsters they are one piece. I ran across a Youtube video where they were doing a cam upgrade and instead of pulling the rocker boxes off they cut the push rods and tubes with a bolt cutter and put in adjustable push rods and a two piece tube.

I know the bike has a K&N air filter, jet kit, and pipes on it.

Just wondering if it has had cam work done on it too?

Those are typical push rod tubes for a big twin. If you open them and see that the pushrods have been changed to adjustables, then it is likely that someone has been in the cam chest.

It probably has a different cam since the timing cover is not OEM / riveted on.

If you are talking about push rods being 2 piece instead of the PR covers, then yes, you would have aftermarket PRs. You could easily pop off the PR covers to check.

If you have aftermarket PRs, you may have a cam upgrade, but not necessary. The only way to find out is to get in there. The other reason a cam cover is replaced is if the pick-up sensor needed replacing.

I'm betting you do have an aftermarket cam, because you have non-stock pipes and free flowing air filter.

Is it not possible to upgrade exaust and air cleaner to flow freer than stock on an EVO with out upgradeding cams?

On a 20+ yr old bike with changed pipes, breather and cam cover I would say its a good bet the cam been updated with new bearings.

Yeah, but does the cam need upgrading if you go with after market exhaust and breather?

If it had an "L" cam... probably no... but... being a Dyna... I'm betting if it don't have a Cam... It needs one.

Answer is no, as Racepres said. Exhaust and breather is normally the first steps of Stage 1 build.

I'm willing to bet that the bike already has a cam. Look at the chrome upgrades on that bike. Someone spent a little money putting that on, and probably would have put a cam in the bike with other upgrades. Again, the only real way to find out is open her up.
