Oil Viscosity and Evo's...

I was looking in my service manual trying to find what's the rake in degrees for my Fatboy and I ran across the engine oil recommendations and was just wondering, for you guys that live in the warmer climates above 80° f do you use straight 60 weights? And should we...? For me on Long Island I know ambient temps easily get into the 90's and road temps easily get to 120*.. So I was wondering do any of you use Straight 60 weight as recommended? I garage my bikes so cold starts don't get below 50*..

When I was riding shovels, 60 weight was totally acceptable..

one more question, Does any one know what the rake is on a98 Fatboy???

Thanks.. keep warm..

Bob I've been running 20/50 year round. That's in both bike, the Evo and TC.

Thanks Tony.. I was only asking because of what I read in the FSM.. I as well have been running the 20w-50 and when I can find it the Pennzoil 25w-50... Do you happen to know what the rake is?... I'm actually more interested in the rake...

Was gonna say 30 or 32 can't remember off hand which it was.

Valvoline dino has been my goto for both straight weights & 20-50 since I started riding.

In your case use 20w50.

Straight 50 or 60 are obsolete nowadays and Evo does not need it, and even if you want use it i would only recommend them in really all-year hot climates... but even in that case you can use 20w60.

60 weight straight oil in the May- October months here in East Texas, and Service Manual straight oil recommendations in all other temps.
. Straight- grade oil has worked consistently for me. The latest-greatest doesn't mean better.
. Best wishes to you,98. Ken

I take it you get the VR1?

Yup, Only reason the manual suggests straights in the summer is lifters and valve train. They can say 20-50 is the same but the engine does rattle less when hot with straight 50 or 60.
