I'll betcha he still knew what the condition of the bike was.
I seriously doubt that noise "just started" when you bought it from him.
Still though if he won't pay, you don't have much legal recourse.
You could give him a friendly reminder.
I doubt if you took him to small claims court he would have to pay.
You could check it out though.
Seems like the guy doesn't have any morals though, and if that's the case you'll never get any $ back.
I just hope that you paid less than it was worth to off set your rebuilding of the motor?

You mentioned at the beginining the main bearing was loose on the shaft. When they got it apart could you see where the bearing had spun on the shaft? These are a tapered roller bearing and are a press fit with a spacer in between the bearings to set the end play even if it was loose on the shaft the drive sprocket and spacer holds it in place just trying to picture what the original problem was or were the tapered rollers chewed up and trying to drop into the primary? If they were chewed up the original problem might have been not enough end play. Just curious about what they actually found when it was apart.

and I found the dipstick was broken off in the
trans. Metal all inside the trans.

me to look twice because it was obviously
some kind of die-cast thing and it was strange
to use that sort of material as a dipstick.
- anyhow , that transmission definitely needs
to be completely stripped down , cleaned
and inspected.
cheers and good luck

When I bought my evo it turned out it had a bad lifter. I called the guy I bought her off of and he just played stupid. I know the frustration well. I ended up bitting the bullet and took her to the local gearhead guru and he did the lifter and tossed in a new hot cam while he was down there for free. He replaced the base gaskets and cleaned up the head as well. It was $1000 well spent. I threw in a bottle of JD as a thanks for the cam. Hes now a great friend and on speed dial.
Some things may be costly, but what can come with them are golden. Glad to hear your up and running. Keep the faith!
