Default Tire & Wheel Fit for 2000 FDXWG

Hi all,

My bike is 6 years old and has 9K miles on it. I bought it used last year, so not sure if any tire replacements have ever been made or not. Seems unlikely by mileage alone. Took it to be serviced at a stealer for the very first time (dynotuned) and the nice young lady who was helping write the order and inspect the bike made note that the tires were wearing down. I know it's a sales pitch, but I appreciated the note. Wear bars on front are getting close, rear actually looks better.

The front wheel is the standard 21 x 2.15 with a Dunlop D402F MH90-21 tire on it. (I will probably replace it with the same).
The rear wheel is a 16 x 3.00 with a Dunlop D401 130/90.

I see from the Dunlop web site that they have matching D402 rear tires in slightly wider ratios as in the MU85B16. They also seem to indicate that they can be mounted on either 3.00 or 3.50 wide rims.

Given it's time to consider new tires, I'd really like to get some replacement spoke wire wheels with polished SS spokes. I see that custom wheel builders don't seem to make rims in the 3.00 size anymore, and 3.50 is a common width for 16" rims.

A couple of things about the rear I'd like to ask.

1) I don't want any fit or clearance problems, so should I switch over to the D402 MU85B16 tires or not? I would be going from a 25.40" diameter 5.18" width to a 25.71" diameter and a 5.51" width.
2) Will the speedo calibration be off by much, and if so, are there ways to fix this? How?
3) Is there any advantage or disadvantage in changing the type from 401 to 402?
4) Is there any reason to consider a different wheel diameter (17"-18") or even wider wheel and tire that fits under this bike w/o clearance problems.

Thanks
