Thanks....think I'm just going to take it to a mechanic next week & get the once over on it anyway (private sale). But at least now I don't feel like I did some seriously damage.......a clogged filter sounds good compared to what I was envisioning I'll let you guys know what it ended up being once I find out.

Ranger 73 & Jonesee got it right.....THANK YOU ALL !!!!!!!!! So its a customized 2010 soft tail & the Builder had switched out the 1 gas tank with gas gauge for a side by side tear drop 5g tank (2 tanks---no more guage). what I failed to realize was that he also replaced the fuel on/off switch for a petcock!!!!!! Didn't even think to look for it b/c of the bike year....but you guys got me thinking & in the end I only had ~ 1/3 of a tank o gas left so I took another look at the "shut off switch" & sure enoughit was a petcock & when i turned it to reserve......presto fired up
Thanks again....I overlooked a customization---you guys got me to look again

The reason he put the petcock on was because he removed the fuel guage. That way you have a reserve.
Take a good look at the petcock and make sure you understand which position is the regular setting and which position is the reserve setting.
If you run the bike in the reserve setting, you will run right through reserve and when you run out of fuel, you are out.
It just occurred to me:
You have a fuel injected bike, watch your odometer, you never want to run that bike out of fuel.
Mine is carbed so I usually run it until it dies then switch to reserve. You don't wanna do that with an FI bike.

Thanks again & will do. Kinda glad about the petcock..... Originally I was watching the miles & guesstimating ~15mpg & have been neurotic about filling up (except for this time of course)...kinda like the backup insurance of the petcock and mine seems simple enough has "on", "off", &"reserve". I know some have a free flow setting so made sure to look for that. Thanks again..... Your help & advice is appreciated

Everyone does what you did at some time.
No damage to the bike.
If the bike stalling is related (and I don't think it is) it would be related to the neutral safety switch, or if lurched hard enough, maybe you jarred some crud in the tank loose and it flowed to the fuel filter and your bike is starving out for fuel.
Both, long shots.
Are you out of fuel???
His bike is a 2010 so no petcock. That was my first thought.
A couple of times a year I will do that and get about a block when the bike reminds me.

No damage to tranny, but something else is wrong. I had a buddies bike who crashed, and broke the clutch, i rode that bike with no clutch and no stopping shifting for almost 20 miles with no clutch pulled in, i popped it into and out of each great with no clutch. That was at 15k miles, he now has 90k on the bike and same tranny, no issues at all. Would not recommend doing that though

that's why people think the hd security sucks. it gets blamed for rider error about 99 times out of 100. if it were the security, it would never even turn over, let alone fire.
I certainly hope you're doing better than 15mpg. doing 80mph, uphill, into the wind, in third gear you should do better than 15mpg.....
