Why is it called a Derby cover?

Heres another theory:
It may have been named after the derby hat which was also an ornament of expression. This conjecture is very likely since the first Harley Davidsons were fabricated around the same time that derby hats were in fashion in the US and were worn by some eccentrically lavish individuals who attended the Kentucky Derby horse race

You wouldn't guess it from looking at a Twin Cam, but take a look at these primary covers for knucklheads/panheads from Paughco. Notice the little derby hat sitting there.

Now,what about "Oil Bag"?Even the oldest MC's didn't have bags to hold their oil. That term somehow annoys me.Is it just cool to say it,or what?

OK, we settled the Derby Cover. Let's work on "Oil Bag" and Jiffy stand.

Not so fast. my 69 FL does not have a Derby Cover, before we move on to the Jiffy stand I would like to find out why Harley did, then did not and then did. Oh, and I can put that side stand down in a Jiffy compared to that stand in the back of the bike.

There you go again, screwing it up for everyone.. .. Now I realized mine is not a derby cover. Guess I will have to go back to calling it a clutch cover.

Yeah! Jiffy Stand! I've been wondering that myself. I think it's because Harley strives to be different and they couldn't call it a kick stand or side stand, because that's what everyone else calls it?

I used wear an old derby cover when I first started riding but it never caught on with other riders.
I know. I've tried to "jiffy" mine down but I always end up kicking it, so it'll always be a KICK stand to me.
