I hung out in a northern Virginia bar and they had t's and stickers that said "here kitty kitty", it's a ref to a certain female body part. Most likely the HA's shirt was meaning the same thing.

I ride protected = boots/jeans/jacket/gloves/glasses. I just got back from a trip to Missouri and a can of some kind hit me just above the ankle - it cut the shoe laces apart and cut the leather. If I had been wearing gym shoes or something else it probably would have severely cut my leg. When it comes to riding I'd rather be safe then comfortable. Besides it's not all that un-comfortable to wear correct protective clothes.
I also got hit by a June bug many years ago - it richoched off the tank and hit me in the knee. It would have felt worse if I was wearing shorts.
Last year I saw a rider on a Harley wearing shorts/muscle t-shirt and sandals. My wife said he looked ridiculous. I wondered how he was able to shift.
It's your life, ride however you want.

Yeah, I don't get not wanting to wear the right safety gear but then there's a great disparity in what people feel is appropriate there too.
At one point I was laughed at because I wore a full face helmet and a textile jacket for safety and comfort. Right after that Harley started making textile stuff that was rediculously expensive but everyone seemed to snap it up and we know about full face helmets.
I'm just happy to see so many younger riders out there on Harleys. Most of them seem to be on Dynas, mostly Street Bobs or Low Riders, and are going their own way with some cutting edge performance stuff.
You ride long enough and you'll figure out what it takes to ride for the long haul whether it be apparel or bike.
