Air Cleaner upgrade costs

Air Cleaner upgrade costs
So I was wondering why on earth a company could produce an air cleaner kit (metal housing and k&n style element) and judge that it would survive on the retail market for 300+ dollars? Am I missing something here? Im having a hard time understanding how something, smaller than a frisbee, could make sales at that price. Now I know someone here is going to say, "hey they sell them at that price because people are willing to pay for it..." I get that concept, but really!? At least with an exhaust kit your looking at many feet worth of tubing that is coated. Are companies really putting money into r&d on improving maxium air flow in a filter element? Over all, I don't get it...maybe I'm ignorant. Sorry. Anyways I was curious to hear what others think?

Over on the softail forum, there was a discussion about a coil cover-real"cool" looking! Cost over $200 !! For a damn cover!
I posted a cover I had on my old bike-I took a Kuryakin chrome taillight cover[$12.00 on Ebay],made a bracket, and made a coil cover out of it. I got asked"what's your point?" Duh-point is $200 for a lousy cover?
Looking at some of the prices of these 'covers' for airfilters, coils, horns woow! Just crazy money!

I hear the same arguments on guitar forums all the time, too. "Why would anybody pay $$$$ for "X", when you can get "Y" for $?
Who cares? Is somebody holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy it? Is the presence of "X" in the marketplace diminishing you in some way? I don't understand why a Lamborghini Gallardo costs like it does, either, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

When you get down to it, function is not really any different from one intake to another. People like to buy stuff with a fancy name or logo, that's up to them. Or you can buy an intake for $100 that flows the same and does the same.
My first aftermarket intake was a Big Sucker and for $100 I thought it was a good deal. That was until the crappy metal that the backing plate was made of cracked. So I went for a DK Customs 587, made of steel, external breathers, and around $150. Most of it is hidden by my plain round chrome cover anyway.
