Default How many here have broken a drive belt?

I'm at three so far. Back many years ago I broke one on my 1996 Wide Glide I bought new, with about 100k kilometers(I'm in Canada) on it,but it was my fault cause I let it get to slack. No belt problems since, actually my 2004 Low Rider is over 100k and still on its original belt.
Now my 2012 Heritage softail has been another story. In April of this year I noticed the teeth on the drive belt,a bunch of them in a row, were all cracked, you could push them with your thumb and open the crack, they were ready to let go. So,I phoned my dealer and was told they had to order one,it would be a couple of weeks. So,I stupidly decided to try an aftermarket, BDL belt from Drag Specialty's, which I believe is actually made by Gates. 12k later I'm rolling down the road in the passing lane when this bastard snaps, and I had to head for the medium to get the hell out of the way so I don't get run over. So,I think,no more aftermarket crap,Im getting an H-D one,and order one through the dealer. I'm told 2 weeks. Trying not to lose so much of my prime riding season,I call around at all the dealers around and none have a belt in stock, and I hear "No one ever breaks one" over and over. So,THREE weeks and two days later,my belt comes in,finally,as I'm working tonight I can't get at it till tomorrow. I'm replacing the rear pulley this time too,as some of the chrome is coming off. Oh yea, this Heritage is a 2012,has 92,000km on it,the original belt went bad at 80k,the BDL lasted 12k. The motor is stock except for stage 1,and I just ride a lot,not hard(no burnouts or foolish ****). Just wondering, how many belts have you broke, and did you repace it with an H-D or after market? How long did it take your dealer to get one? This would not be good on a cross country trip.

At 206,000 miles on my '94 Softail, I'm on my third belt. Never broke one, but I replace them at 85,000 miles, and the pulleys if needed.

My 12 Heritage broke a belt at 25,000. Luckily for me it was at the dealer having yet another electrical problem dealt with and it broke there overnight in their service bay, the day before the warranty ran out so they had to replace it.

Mine snapped at between 45 - 50K. Dealer told me they never snap like that.....I said never is not true anymore then. No sign of wear, or imprints from a rock, or any blemishes of any kind anywhere on it. It was during a 'spirited' 1/2 shift, but not racing by any means.

I changed my belt at 213,000kms because it was always at the back of my mind of breaking because I found a hole in it at 54,000kms. I was doing suspension work on the swing arm and thought while it was apart I should replace the belt with a hole in it. The side of the belt looked worn and shinny. The new belt looked the same, so I probably could have gone a lot longer but you never know. I drive hard most of the time, not stupid hard but hard enough to worry about a belt with a hole in it. The new belt has 30,000kms on it and no wear showing yet

Never broke a belt, but have snapped chains. Usually change out a belt about every 150,000 miles. Chains last 30,000 if I'm lucky.

i have an 04 bike with 180k on the clock with the original belt. been meaning to get around to it but just have not had the time.

i ride the bike most weekends and suspect ill fix it when it breaks. its the 1 1/8 belt not the 1 inch.

i ll probably convert it to a 1 inch when i change.

to answer your original question. multiple bikes, over almost 30 years of riding. never broken a belt. average riding approx 15 to 20k a year. suspect im due.
