Dog on a bike!

Dog on a bike!
Today while riding down a 50 MPH State highway, I passed a guy -- we waved-- and as we went past eachother, I saw he had a dog on the back seat of his bike. I'm not saying it was a person of unfortunate looks; it was a dog. A canine.
I've been riding since 1968 and thought I had seen a lot of stuff, but this one stumped me. With a closing speed of 100 mph, I didn't have time for a close look. I couldn't see the dog until I was level with him. I don't know if the dog had a harness or just amazingly good balance. I just know that the driver probably wasn't a Phi Beta Kappa man, if you know what I mean.
Am I being unfair? Is there a way to carry a dog on a motorcycle that's safe for both the dog and the rider?

RE: Dog on a bike!
I cant imagine anyone with a dog on their bike. That baffles me to no end and down right pisses me off. My dogs are my "kids" - I could not imagine putting them in harms way like that.

RE: Dog on a bike!
When I worked on Honda/Triumph/BSA back in the late 60s, we had one customer who always had his dog with him on his bike. The dog wouldsit on the gas tank and put his front paws on a padded bracket the guy had made that bolted onto his handlebar clamps. The guy had a windshield as I recall, and the dog (one of those little terrier type pieces of shark-bait) rode quite comfortably.

I saw that once too, years ago in Missoula MT. except with two dogs! I couldnt believe it! This guy got on his bike (70s bike w/th bench seat) he gave a little snap and the first dog jumped up in his lap crossways, the other jumped on the back of the seat also crossways....and sort of held on somehow, and he took off. Just in town though, not highway.

RE: Dog on a bike!
I have seen dogs as passengers on bikes several times. I have also seen girlfriends, wives, and children. They were all probably equally safe (or unsafe). I took my son for rides all the time. I would have taken my dog but I was afraid he would scratch the seat or paint.
