58 Pan w/5/K miles - Score
Looking for a Pan the past two years. Found one in Georgia earlier this summer and was never able to schedule a trip to look at it. It was a 48 in restored cond. but had a number of non original parts.
But, this week a 58 with only a little over 5K on the odometer was at Stenzel's Auction just a block and a half from my house.
It's story was somewhat depressing. The second owner got it in the early 70's from an older friend that didn't ride much but had made many changes to it.
The story is from his ex wife who divorced him just before he did the work. She said she got the Corvette and he got the two bikes. The reason for the divorce was partly the Pan was torn down in her kitchen for two years.
The second owner had knuckle also and rode it more. He was not happy with the changes in the Pan. 15 years ago. He did a complete restoration with H-D parts. To do the work he had a friend that was an Indy but wanted to do the work himself in the Indies shop. His friend agreed IF he would sell the Knuckle to him. He (Tony) was a master mechanic and completed the restoration. It was ridden some for two years when Tony decided that he wanted a Buell. He went to a dealer and took a test ride. During the ride he went off of a curve and impaled himself on a stump of a small tree that was cut down. He died from bleeding out prior to anyone finding him.
The son inherited the bike. Since he didn't ride it was kept at the Indy's shop the entire time. The son had several heart attacks and surgery. He had insurance but it didn't cover everything. His mother helped out with the bills as best she could and they decided to sell the bike. The son wanted to keep it but had no other source for cash so they went to auction with it.
She told this story to the group going to bid on the bike. I was surprised at the number of interested bidders. There was about 14. My dealer was going to be there but told me if I was going to bid on it he wouldn't go and bid against me.
One guy had a black T on that had three words on it in descending order.

I got to get me one of those.
The bidding only lasted less than two minutes. It started at $5K and stopped at 20K. Then it hit me. I was the last one holding a paddle up! I meant to stop at 16K.
Oh well I have always said that H-D's are the best bikes that I have ever overpaid for.
No pics yet as I go pick it up tomorrow. That just leaves me with one bike to complete my collection and that is a Shovel.
