Hey Man 11-09-2018 06:32 PM

Bygone Days.

"Memories light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories of the way we were
Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were."

Hey Man 11-09-2018 06:47 PM

I think you meant that YUppies were the scum of the earth.

Very apropos. Today I discovered a website about the high school graduation class two years before me, with all the yearbook pictures. A bunch of deaders, two huge crushes, including one who's dead. Things are even worse because of redistricting, the old high school building is gone, the construction of a new building, huge demographic shift, yadda, yadda.

No mention of me specifically, and I intend to keep it that way...:icon_nic:

Remember those days very well !!!! Yep ! Brothers relocated all over the map...some brothers gone forever...Viet Nam thinned the herd a little and nature claimed some ....but like the song says "The way we were " Thanks man !!!

I love pic 3 - the dude repairing his wheel.
Back in the day if you rode an HD , you had to know how to spin the wrenches.

I was born at the end of the 60's in rural America. I believe my generation will be the last to have experienced freedom in this country.

I grew up in that era and still haven't grown up. Loved the pic of the guy kick starting his bike. Reminded me of kick starting my 65 Sporty with 10.5:1 pistons and a magneto. Makes my knee hurt just thinking about that bike.

Hey I know one of those two chicks towards the beginning, that's Pulsating Paula. The one with tattoos on her back, on the left. She's still around, does alot of picture touch ups and colorization. She's been around the bike scene for years.,,,

I think this may have been the last year that the park was open for camping, or close to. Due to "bad behavior" the park was closed during bike week in following years. I camped in the park the last year that camping was allowed. The stage show on top of a bus was pretty raunchy. A couple of Japanese bikes were burnt to the ground. At some point one night a huge explosion occurred, really loud. Drag races on the main road. The cops didn't dare enter the park, kind of hung out outside the gates. The next year it was closed so I went to the Buffalo Chip in later years. The last time I went to Sturgis was in 1986. Sure has changed.

The song chosen for it sucks ass...should've been something like Old Days (Chicago), Making Memories (Rush), American Pie (Don Mclean), Green Grass and High Tides (The Outlaws), Kodachrome (Paul Simon), Once in a Lifetime (Talking Heads), that's what I came up with kinda quick. Anything though would beat having to hear that skank, fugly wench Streisand in my head any more than 1 second.

It was a BSA Victor 441. A friend of mine had one in high school. What a thumper.

Jehu 11-10-2018 08:06 PM

Those were the days when bikers were bikers.
Those were the days when freedom was free.
Those were the days that sadly are gone forever.
Thank you for sharing the pics.

I had one of those - 1969 BSA 441 Victor Special. Got it in early 1973, rode it from Omaha NE to Denver Colorado via Cheyenne Wyoming. I used to let guys try to start it for laughs, as they nearly broke their ankles. It could kick back like a MOFO. Still have a failed piston from it sitting on my work bench - a reminder to know what you are doing before you do it.

mctraveler 11-10-2018 08:34 PM

I believe it could have been a 441.......really can't remember.....this thread all of a sudden brought back images I haven't thought of for almost 50 years........how young we were back then

2AMGuy 11-10-2018 10:23 PM

One of my best friend's neighbors (he's in his 80's) called me a "wallet biker" because I've "accessorized my '13 CVO Ultra and my '18 Tri-Glide the want that I want then to look and also to fit me correctly.
The difference me and my friend's neighbor is that even though he is a really good mechanic and has many years of dirt biking and shop hours is that I actually go places (as in long road trips) and put many more miles on my bikes than he has or will.

In 50 years (next March) of riding I've had my share of breakdowns (mainly with Shovelheads) and road side repairs and to this day I cannot seem to stop myself from packing 20 pounds of tools (that I'll hopefully never need) into my saddlebags just in case that I should need them!

Somewhere I have the pics of me and my cousin pulling a trashed tranny out of my '76 Super-Glide in Texas in '80 but I'm not sure that we took pics of our adventure when we returned from Sturgis and had to remove his outer primary cover TWICE due to a chain adjuster issue.
Looking back it wasn't the "good ol' days" at the time but it sure makes for memories in later years.

As for pics, another friend (a semi-pro photographer) rode to Sturgis with us in '89 (the 49th) and he took a "black & white" of me (on my '87 FXSTC) and some friends riding in Sturgis and it's a very "classic/nostalgic" look. Maybe I'll dig it up and post it someday.

DaveE 11-11-2018 07:07 AM

Great photos, great times. Thanks :)

panheadache 11-11-2018 07:56 AM

Yeah, I still carry a bunch of tools, also. Old habits die hard. But think about it: No cell phones, no one to call even if it existed, cash only no ATM's, tube tires and flats, thrown chains and lost master links. No local Cyclegear LOL. You might be 200 miles from a HD dealer generally, who didnt give a durn about you anyway (it was the time of the upside-down HD patch). You needed to be self sufficient. Cars would not stop to help you since you were a pariah. If a cop came along it was hostile at best, generally like get that pile of junk off my road and get going asap if you know whats good for you (after searching and hassling you).

Look at the mud and road grime in those picks. Generally were a dirtier lot back then lol. Also, rides were generally geared toward a camping destination and partying around campfires out in the boonies. We had a giant water oak we camped under waaay off the beaten path on an old mans property that probably never knew we were there lol.

nibroc 11-11-2018 08:32 AM

the Last Resort pic was back in the early seventies
