Could have done the same results with a basketcase,

Where does it say that it didn't? Is it somehow better if someone allows a bike to become a "basket case"?
It could be an S&S engine and a bunch of random/custom/repop parts that were actually manufactured many years after 1968.

Haven't seen one of those old Hurst rear brake calipers in decades, much less a working one.

Read the article, it says it started as an untouched original 68 bike and something to the effect of it being a shame in a way.

So in other words, these guys ruined a stock 68 to build that. I'm all for customizing and building something unique, but leave the stock bikes alone. Seeing that they only used the engine, forks and some of the frame; maybe they could have sold the stock bike and bought all the parts for way less and still had funding to build this bike.

I have done that numerous times out of a pile of boxes from swap meets, crying shame they raped a stock 68 to do that.
