When to call it quits? When is enough, enough?

I was changing my oils the other day and was letting the bottle drip the last few drops before starting to pour the next quart. It got me thinking…

When do you call it quits?

Do you let the container drip dry, until no more drops come out?

Do you pour until the majority of oil is out, then pitch the container?

Or are you like me and use the Popcorn Rule(R) - you let the container drip until there’s a two seconds between drips?

When is enough, enough?

702 04-11-2024 11:40 AM

It just really depends.

What kind of oil do you use?

diablos 04-11-2024 11:44 AM

leave it tipped overnight and the rest of the oil can get dumped into the hand oiler, good enough for cutting oil

I go down to the last drip drip drip 🙌

Calif Fat Bob 04-11-2024 12:03 PM

It's the same as standing at the urinal. Empty it out, shake it a bit to get the last few drops out, then button it up! :D

Chris_G 04-11-2024 12:06 PM

Dripping isn't a good thing, I'd suggest checking for a STD

CaffeineBuzz 04-11-2024 12:06 PM

which stage of the oil change are we talking?

the old oil must first be warmed properly by taking the bike out for about 15-20 minutes
then you empty the old oil, and replace the filter
now before you fill, remember, the entire inside of your bike is coated with old contaminated oil, it's in the pump and any passages, etc
as soon as you put new oil in and start running it through the bike, it immediately picks up those contaminants
this is why you change it a second time, after warming it up and allowing the new temporary oil a chance to mix with the old contaminated residual oil in the system
once you drain a second time, there will still be the aforementioned residue inside and throughout, but it will be less contaminated
now that you've done your double oil change, warm the bike up one last time with a quick ride
obtain a sample and have it sent for ppm analysis by any of a number of capable testing laboratories....if it tests well, a third oil change is not needed

I love oil, we should have a whole section here dedicated just to oil

And when you get older, it takes a little longer to 'empty it out'.

Don't turn this in to a coffee thread

How much shaking is too much?

BouseBill 04-11-2024 12:22 PM

shake it more than twice and you're playing with it :icon_laugh:

At $22 a quart the Harley primary and trans oil is liquid gold, Like a good whiskey, I get every drop!

Depends if I’m wearing chaps or not… I like to use the 2 seconds rule pretty much.

Same with the hose at pump. Speaking of which I've noticed that guys will always shake the nozzle when it kicks off before putting it away, whereas women never do. Not a joke, I'm serious. It's like it's in our genes, get it? Genes.

I'll be appearing here all week .

Really????????????
Change it 2 or 3 times?
Too OCD for me.

RHPAW 04-11-2024 01:31 PM

FJB will decide when you've had enough oil.

Y2K 04-11-2024 01:39 PM

At the end of the day I use a straw and sip the last out and swallow it with a shot of bourbon, makes me shit good in the morning.

M18A1 04-11-2024 01:41 PM

I believe in the "Life by the Drop" method so stated by Stevie Ray Vaughn

FlamedFXR 04-11-2024 01:56 PM

Wait...what... there is oil somewhere? It needs to be changed?????

That's what I thought! I'll admit it too... I didn't realize that until last year some time...

I think I will look into an oil scavenger, wonder if there are any posts about that.

Popcorn rule...love it. Is that a worldwide known thing? It's what I do

like most of what I say, I just came up with that. You know when cooking popcorn, you wait until its like 2-3 seconds between pops, then you know it’s done

Figured I’d put the reserved mark (R) on it so no one steals it

that’s my go to rule for decades, taught my kids that. Maybe it’s written on the bag?🤷🏼‍♂️

Dude, don't be a dumbass. Amsoil? It's telling you right on the bottle that it's dirt. It's saying I "am soil".

Don't pour dirt in your bike. Get with the program. Use honey.

Bone Doc 04-11-2024 04:01 PM

It depends, Brandon. If you use new oil from the same container to lube the O-ring on the new filter then you need to let it drip two more drops than you normally would to compensate for the oil lost on the O-ring. If you use old oil on the O-ring then however you normally do it.

It doesn't matter how many times you let it drip. The last drop always ends up in your shorts.

Rob Harper 04-11-2024 04:02 PM

I vote Popcorn Rule. But use peanut oil.

DaveyFB 04-11-2024 04:05 PM

Years I asked a girl I was dating when she last had the oil changed in here car...blank look....what ?
She had other great attributes tho...yeah she was blonde
I usually warm it up 1st, then let it drain while I go do something else
It will never drain out fully if you watch it
Why isn't this in the Earl Four'em ?

BrandonSmith 04-11-2024 04:07 PM

Definitely on the popcorn bag, that’s why it’s the popcorn rule, but it’s not on the oil container.

Never thought of starting the bike up 1st then draining it

Damn another good point! So much to think about

Leimy 04-11-2024 04:11 PM

I thought "oil" talk was banished by mods?
As long as we are talking about oil, changing, etc, and dripping...
OP talked about the oil in the jug dripping.
I think some of you got off topic. FOCUS
But what about how long do you let it drip FROM the engine?

I usually check the tire pressure while I am waiting.
I do 36 and 40.
Or 40 and 36?

Only flat on the bottom

Stiggy 04-11-2024 04:12 PM

Empty a quart, set the container on its side, empty the next 3 then go back and get what collected in the empty containers while you were draining the others. (Doesn't everybody do this?)
:D

Oko 04-11-2024 04:14 PM

“Do you pour until the majority of oil is out, then pitch the container?”

This.
