I'am trying to get my bike set up to get the best gas mileage possible. Considering it's a big Harley. Someguy's made the suggestion to use synthetic oils in it to get better gas mileage.

Just wondering if I switched to synthetic oils what I could expect?
Right now it's a totality stock new bike with 850 miles on it.

I think it is almost a wash with the added mileage to the extra cost of the oil, if you get 2 mpg more you will get 12 extra miles per tank, figure around ten tanks between oil changes = 120 extra miles or about 3 gallons of gas so figure a savings of $10 in gas per oil change.
I look at it the other way that the savings in mileage off-sets the cost of the synthetic oil from which you get smoother shifting, cooler running, quieter engine and longer engine life.

 

Picked up 9% on my truck with synthetics in engine,trans and differential. I didn't bother to check my scoot.

 

I've run synthetic in all my cars, pickups, and motorcycles for at least 15 years. I don't think you'll find that the increased gas mileage (and I think you'll need careful statistical analysis to see if there really IS any significant improvement) will make up for the increased cost.

What synthetic oil does best is to protect the engine against heat and startup wear. I've opened up engines with a lot of miles that used synthetic oil and found them to be clean as a whistle inside; that's not the case with engines running conventional oil.

Even at $4 per gallon, you'll not find that there's much out-of-pocket difference whether you get 40 mpg or 42 mpg.

 

In regards to mileage, I doubt there is a statistically noteworthy difference. The improvementswould be in decreasedengine/driveline wear and superior heat tolerance.

 

Engine wear and cooling are your main benefits. Any mileage gains are gravy.....

Everything I have read said it will be noisier with synthetic in the engineand people I have talked to say their engine seemed to make more noise when they switched to synthetic. I don't know about engine life since I've heard it both ways. I use HD 20W/50 Dino oil in the engine and always have.

 

My 03 Heritage (with a carb) always got between 40-45 mpg. I changed to Amsoil in all 3 holes with about 11,500 miles on it. I now have about 13,500 and still get 40-45 mpg. One thing I DID NOTICE was that it shifted much nicer ....smoother quieter.

 

How much is the HD oil per quart?
