If it's a close friend's bike, I'll suggest improvements. If it's a stranger's bike, I'll say nothing.

Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one. My response would depend on who is doing the asking; if really a friend asking about his, or anyone's ride, I will assume he wants the truth, and I'll give it, but when a stranger asks, he's not seeking the truth, only confirmation for what he already believes.

 

I have an Aunt who once worked in the delivery room of a local hospital. She told me that when a cute little baby is born, all of the nurses and doctors say, "What a cute little boy/girl." However, when a hideous little bundle of joy appears, they all say, "he,she looks just like you." I try to apply this to other peoples bikes. If you want me to compliment your nice ride; I will. If you go fishing for a compliment for your semi-rusty, semi-custom, usually metric cruiser; I'll usually say something like, "that bike was made for you"; or, "somebody had you in mind when they made that bike."

 

Man, you gotta be able to find something about the bike like " hey, nice kickstand"

I won't insult you, but if you ask me for an honest opinion I will give it.

 

A coworker commented to me when I first got the Ultra "You deserve that bike!" Now I'm beginning to wonder what he really meant....

I just had someone ask me what I thought of his bike after he had installed ridiculously high ape-hangers. I personally do not care for them, but he seemed to like them. It really ruined the nice look of the bike in my opinion. But like so many have stated, people personalize their bikes to make them unique. So if they turn a Halle Berry looking bike into a Kathy Bates looking bike, they are the ones that have to 'sleep' with it.

 

If someone asks me, I tell them "it's not for me". That usually ends it. If they pursue what was not for me, I will tell them.
