Riding tips for Newbies
Well spring is arrived.YES. Nearly time to ride and for us new guys who have no experience touring we would like to hear from the Journeymen riders. Share with us some of your vast experience and knowledge. What not to do, what we should do, what to bring etc. etc. etc.Common sense aside.
One I learned from a journeyman is to tie up your kickstand to the front wheel when your bike is parked on a ferry boat. That way when the boat lunges your bike will stay put.
Let,s here from the rest of you cats, c,mon show us what you know. Devulge your vast pool of knowledge.

Skidder,
Beyond what folks will tell you in this thread, do a search for what you're looking for. There have been some really great threads recently with lots of good advice.
As you can see from my signature, I can carry more than you can so my advice might differ from most, but here are some basics in no certain order.
1) good skin and lip protection
2) rain suit
3) minimize underwear and socks, buy as you go at a walmart and throw the old ones away.
4) consider mailing yourself a "care" package if you know where you'll be staying. Consider mailing old heavier clothes - jeans, shirts, etc., back to your house.
All this depends on how long you'll be gone and how far you'll go. There are a zillion great ideas out there from the guys and gals that rough it more than me and the wife do now.
Pay attention. They'll have some good tips.

The best advice I got from 2 old timers when I started riding was to "ride your own ride". When I went riding with them the first time before I got the advice, I was struggling to keep up with the lead bike through the turns. When we stopped that's when I got the advice. Don't push yourself and make a mistake because you are riding someone elses ride.

What does ATGATT stand for? Every time I see you post that, I picture you throwing up on your computer and that's the sound you make.
