Default RE: 1000 mile service price

The dealer that did my 1K gave me an estimate of $270 , on picking up the bike the price had been lowered to under $220 , happy me and real surprised . Another HD dealer 50 miles in the other direction wanted $400+ . Think as these are factory dealers and supposedly factory trained techs ALL Dealers ought to have a flat rate manual for time required for whatever repair or service and stick to it . When I did automotive repairs we did not even dare to charge above the " flat rate " and charged less if it took less time .

We should not be charged for the time a tech leaves a job to do something else or if he is having an issue with whatever he is working on . All techs have problems at times , but we should not be expected to pay more because the tech took longer than it should have !

It was less than $300 here in CA. Last year my Yamaha 1100 cost almost $500 for the 500 mile check. No complaints about Harley.

Not sure where you worked but the dealer I work at, the Tech doesn't get to decide what the charge will be, thats decided by the service writer/manager/owner. Flat rate has been around for a long time and thats what the customer pays, not how long it takes the tech, fast or slow.

We should not be charged for the time a tech leaves a job to do something else or if he is having an issue with whatever he is working on . All techs have problems at times , but we should not be expected to pay more because the tech took longer than it should have !
Agree 100%

and charged less if it took less time
Disagree 100% you can't have it both ways. You agree to a cost for the service period. The cost includes parts and labor, how long it "actually" takes the tech is the shops concern, not the customers. If the guy is too slow he won't be working there long, if he is way too fast he will make mistakes and won't be working there long either.

Bay 13 ,

By "WE" I meant the shop , the service manager ! Almost 30 years ago and still remember getting a talking to for taking 4 hrs to do a waterpump on a Cadillac . I had no idea what the FR book called for , but know this job was a pain in the a@@ , told Kenny ( service mgr , ) to look it up , 5.5 hrs. , felt better after that ! He still charged the guy 2 hrs labor as that was what most waterpumps were running , I got screwed as once I made my wages I got 10% of my labor .
