Full face helmets for Cruisers?
:icon_nut: Call me crazy, but full face helmets and cruisers just don't mix! I can see "touring bikes" on a long haul but cruisin' the open road? Come on! For me, Harleys mean freedom. Why have a full face helmet? If you want to feel protected and enclosed, buy a car! If you want to feel more secure, buy a big car! If you want go fast, buy a Japanese bike and then you can use your full face helmet. But don't go cruisin' to enjoy the scenery and wear a full face helmet. To me, you look like a Mexican wrestler! Sorry if I offend anyone, but this is just my humble opinion! Now that I have my Harley, it's a half helmet and shades only because I'm in California and there's a helmet law! Freedom and enjoying the scenes and sounds of the open road! Now that's what it’s all about!

I'd like my family to be able to have an open casket if they want. Not too mention if I do live through an accident I'd like to still have my nose and chin.
If you see the helmet graphic that was posted a while back the majority of damage on helmets are in the face area. I will agree that I would not mandate helmets, but I would still wear one most of the time. I wore a full face helmet on my Sportster and I wear a full face on my Ultra. I still get the feeling of freedom and the open road, but I am protecting myself. In the end it is all about what risks you are comfortable with taking. My comfort level varies and at times I'll take my helmet off for a short jaunt. I guess what I'm saying is your statement is pretty narrow-minded. In order to appreciate someone else's viewpoint you have to be able to see their motivations and you are only seeing your own. |
Point taken Crashin'! It is my own view and only my own and I don't pretend to speek for anyone else.
|
To each his own but when face meets asphalt it makes no difference if you were riding a Harley or a Hayabusa.
|
I'm glad I have the freedom to be unfashionable.

The full face is nice @ 50 degrees F @ 75mph

My apologies to everyone! I was looking at it through the eyes of a Californian. The weather here in central California gets extremely hot and there are lots of beautiful things to see. Especially cruising the coast. I agree that there are circumstances where a full face helmet would be beneficial, i.e. highway speeds, inclement weather, etc. And I know some locations make it next to impossible wearing anything but a full face helmet. I spent six years in Michigan and I would never wear anything but a full face helmet there. But, when conditions are optimal, I think a cruiser would be much better off in a half helmet. When you're sweating your as@%$ off at slower speeds in a full face helmet, it's kind of hard to enjoy anything! Just a thought!

No worries Greenfed. You'll get thousands of opinions on HDF about helmets. I know where you're coming from with the hot weather being here in AZ myself. During the warmer months I wear an ACC half helmet but also sport a Shoei modular when the weather gets cooler. Most of the guys I ride with wear no helmet at all. That's something I've just never felt really comfortable with.

I've worn a 1/2 lid for years but now I'm getting tired of my face freezing in the winter. I just bought a Fulmer open face, with shield, for winter riding. Who knows, I may go back to the 1/2 for year round riding if the new helmet is a hassle. Time will tell.

I rented a sportster for a day of riding hwy 1 out in your neck of the woods a few years back. I have road envy. |
Old enough here to not care what others think, BTW I wear a full face helmet.

I lilved in San Diego for three years. I don't recall ever seeing a locust out there. Hit one of those with your face at 50 MPH and it might change your mind... Sorry if I sounded cranky in my last post. :) |
Oh man! For years I thought one had to lust after/mess around with people of the same sex to be gay, now I find out all it takes is wearing a full face helmet?
Alright, which one of you jerks gave me the geigh? |
OK guys, this is why forums like this one are so great! Different perspectives from all over the world! I'm in a state where it's not uncommon to see people riding crotch rockets wearing nothing more than flip-flops, shorts, no shirt and a full face helmet! So when I see someone cruising the blvd, going 15 MPH, in a custom cruiser wearing a cut off t-shirt, jeans and a full face helmet, it drives me insane! If your going for the look, at least wear the half helmet and shades. California for yah! That's all I'm saying.
|
Not to sound like too much of an ass, but how much time do you spend worrying about what other people are wearing? ;)
|
What ever cocks your pistol Dude. I change according to where I'm going, In town shorty, open road trip 3/4 with shield. don't have a full face.
|
I took a fall and took out a chunk of the outer shell to the right of the chin area. Had I not had a full face helmet on that chunk would have been my chin. That made me a believer in full face helmets, I am glad I had one on at the time and will continue to wear one. I don't think my helmet restricts my range of view. The shield extends past my peripheral vision.
|
I've worn a full face helmet when the weather has been cold and wet on long trips. It makes a big difference to the comfort of the ride. Even in the dry you don't get the bufferting on your face.
Now I wear an open face with a clip on screen for bad weather. |
Free Market... Buy what ever helmet you like.
With me it's more about finding one that fits right. |

brain bucket-face mask
I like the half helmet aptly named brain bucket. It was cold tonight cruising in to town, one of those days where I needed the open road to fix the work hassle, ya know to settle the soul with a night cruise. temp dropped pulled over switched goggles threw on the face mask and comfort no biggie. I dont like the full helmet, but to each their own. If it works and your riding what else matters?
|
What woman wants to kiss a guy with no lower lip or jaw to hang it on? I'll keep the brain bucket 'til I'm too old to kiss.
|
I wear a 1/2 helmet most of the time .I recently got a full face with a flip up and have only worn it once but I will be wearing more this winter . I got caught in a hail storm with my 1/2 helmet this summer hance the full face.
|
I use a full face helmet on a road king, hot weather open the shield but still a little warm.
I do miss the open feeling of the shorty. But the full face provides significantly more facial protection and is great when it rains. Trying to check-out flip-ups. Might be better for quick stops,gas-up, to talk or just cool down. |
Well, first off I'm 62 years old and am way past worrying about what other people think. I do wear a full face helmet and a leather jacket and leather chaps every time I get on my scoot. I don't care if it's 90 degress outside, I am in full leathers. Here's why:
About a year ago one of my gun show buddies was taking his RK out for a ride and rounded a corner with a deer standing right alongside the road...it darted out into the road. In a split second, he decided it best to head for the ditch but hit a hidden stump, flipping him and the bike into the air. He was wearing a T shirt and a half helmet. The best he remembers is the back of the bike came up and struck his face. His lower jaw is still wired together and they are still trying to fit dentures for his lower teeth which were knocked out. Now, you can say that was a freak accident but in these parts deer are a huge problem, one that the local riders are well aware of. He admits he took that blind corner too fast, but, what the hell good does that do him now? No, I'll keep wearing as much protection as I can. I don't feel inhibited at all, it's all in how you look at it. My two cents. |
Put it to you this way:
Cruising on a nice curvy road = Awesome Your face cruising into the pavement = Not Awesome Cruising around in town = Awesome Your face cruising through someone's back window = Not Awesome Cruising down the highway = Awesome A rock cruising into your face = Not Awesome Crusing down some other highway = Awesome A bug cruising into your mouth = Not Awesome Are you getting the picture? Awesome! Image is lame. The 60's are over. Cover up that grill and dome with the best you can afford! |
Nothing humble to your opinion. People wear or not wear helmets for their own reasons. I don't care myself if they wear them or not. Helmets can save a face or brain. They also block the view and add weight to the head --which can impact the neck. People die wearing them--people die not wearing them. Sometimes your the bait --sometimes your the fish.

Try 25-35 degrees at 65 w/o a FF helmet, then let me know how you feel. Once you're thawed out that is. FF helmets offer protection, NOT glamor.
|
Here in hot sweaty Florida I wear a modular helmet when I ride to work. Too many bad drivers not to. I wear a 3/4 or shorty when I'm riding with my riding club. If it's a all day ride, I might wear the FF. I agree with letting those who ride decide. No need to make it mandatory.
|
wear whatever you want what does it matter, i wear a half helmet, an icon jacket more appropriate for a sport bike because it fits nice i like it and it has all the protection, and doc martens or old chuck taylors on my dogs... i probably look like a rolling contradiction but i don't care it's what i want to wear... if someone wants to go full pirate on their bike more power to him, if someone wants to go euro with the skin tight full leathers and plastic mohawk on their helmet, awesome... it's a personal decision and wear what you're comfortable with...

I get what you're saying..I wear a 1/2 but will be getting a full and will wear it depending on the weather and where I'm riding...picking bugs out of your teeth is not fun. |
:icon_doh: not this shit again!!!
