Default How to?

Faast Ed: do you know of a link that details troubleshooting the tensioners? Never worked on this engine before.

Thanks, JT

My last bike a 04 E-glide I bought new. At 32,000 I went big bore and gear driven cams. It was running better then ever at 75,000 when I totaled it. Current bike has 41,000 miles and a brand new motor from the factory. The previous owner didn't check his tensioners and ruined the motor. He replaced the motor and had the heads ported right before I bought it.

This link, along w/ the manual, will give a pretty good idea of how to inspect the tensioners.

What kind of mileage can you expect on a normally maintained bike before it needs work?

Should I rule out bikes with mileage over 30K?

Thanks in advance,

I wouldn't rule out buying one I liked for that kind of mileage. I ride with a couple guys who are well over 75K on theirs, one Road King and one Ultra and they ride theirs like they want to break them or something. The only repairs I know they have needed to make was a starter on the Road King and a belt on the Ultra from standing it up on the back wheel too much and too hard IMO. Neither of them has had anything else go wrong.

My bike has 82k on it and I know several guys who have 130k+ miles on their Twin Cams with nothing but basic maintenance. I did put in gear drive cams and pumped mine up to 95" with head work.

If you want to make a TC88 pretty much bullet proof do the following:

1. Gear driven cams
2. Welded polished balanced crank
3. upgraded oil pump
4. Torrington cam bearings
5. SE compensator.
