I'm used to riding /being around rigids and old school style bikes. Two of our "group" ride Ironheads , or did. One of the guys just showed up with a 06 sportster. I guess I haven't been paying attention to them lately , wow they really grew up !! 1200cc stock , and a LOT bigger looking bike in general. This thing almost dwarfs the Iron head, so how can I call it a half a harley when it looks like that ?? Is that term even used any more or am I giving away my age LOL. Just really wanted to say that I am impressed with what harley has been doing , I may have to go bike shopping , I hear those dyna's are looking pretty good too.
I thought I better edit this to add , please don't take this serious or offensive , it was meant lighthearted and only to compliment Harley on their new breed of sporty, it has really changed since the 70's

People used the half a Harley, piglet, girlie bike, etc... crap,
when I rode this about 20 years ago.
I just smiled, and waved goodbye

Not Swede, knows better.
Picture below is a 1957 Sportster in 1969. 183 mph no fairing.
Leo Payne's Turnip Eater, he bought it new in 57:
In 1996, I bought a 96 1200 Sportster Sport.
HD said that this was the fastest motorcycle they had ever sold off the showroom floor.
It was a big diff from my first sporty in 65, a 64 XLCH.
The youngsters have no idea.

Reminds me of Burt Monro's 1920 Indian Scout in the movie "The World's Fastest Indian" starring Anthony Hopkins.

Thanks mudpuddle, you have inspired me to plan a trip. I've been checking the map and see that the "Turnip Eater" is located about twelve hours away from Omaha in Pickerington, Ohio. On the way I'll make the following stops:
1- The National Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in Anamosa, IA: http://www.nationalmcmuseum.org/museum/
Home of Captain America:
2- The National Museum of The United States Air Force in Dayton, OH: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/
Home of the Blackbird and more:
3- The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, OH: http://www.motorcyclemuseum.org/

RE: How can I call them "half a Harley" now ??
Thanks guys. I just spent the last hour and a half on the motorcycle museum website. One thing it made me realize is that when folks talk all this trash about Harleys being backwards, technologically speaking, is that almost everything you see today has been done by the old timers. Twin cams, gear driven cams, shaft drive, water-cooled, four valved. You name it, they did it. Almost a hundred years ago!!. I still have my 76 Sportster. I am giving it to my son. That way, I have an excuse to keep two bikes and ride the old girl every once in a while. The StreetGlide is nice, but the Sportster has soul.

yeah, it's a girl's bike, wanna race. LOL. funny how people think an 883 is small for a sportster. what size were they really when they were called 900s--883s. chuckle. if you want to call a particular model a girl's bike, it's a fatboy/heritage. i see more women at rallys on these than on sportsters.
