Hwy 50, from KC to Union, is not a bad road. Depending on what time of the day, if school is out, you won't follow the school buses. You will go through lots of small towns and stops.

If you want to ride some backroads, you could go south from Jefferson City and go through steelville, or salem MO. That route would keep you off the interstate most of the way. Mostly 2 lane road down through the ozarks. This route would take a longer, but probably less mileage.

here is a map on bing: http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/?or...5&z=7&pid=5874

I have driven this route lots of two lane, through the country riding. I have not been down this path so foar this year, so I do not know about road construction....

if you are coming to Cape Girardeau, i would suggest looking at highway 72 or 34, 61 is not bad. pm for info around Cape, can get you places to eat and some decent roads. GTG

Another alternative is to stay on 19 out of Steelville, go to Cherryville, turn on hwy 49, take that to hwy 32, go east to hwy 21, go south to Arcadia, then hit east on hwy 72. Some darn fun riding there. Especially 32, which has some great twisties on it as it goes through Mark Twain Nat'l Forest. On 72 outside of Farmington a guy even has a giraffe on his farm!

OR, hwy 50 to St. Clair, then hwy 47 to hwy 21, south to 72 and east to Cape.

There was no construction on any of these roads south of Union as of a week ago. At least, I didn't run into any!

there is a little construction between hwy 51, 72 junction at patton and jackson. they are putting in a new bridge, so there is a metal grate bridge in for now. other than that from fredrick town to jackson is all fresh pavement.

gun store is still there, gotta love a place that is a liquor store and gun store combo.

there is a new BBQ spot outside fredricktown called Tomboy's. have not been there, but hear it is good.

Farmington also has a branding iron and warehouse BBQ, both good places.
