DEER!!! DO Whistles Work?

I ride to work most days and have been seeing more deer because it is getting to be that time of year. Do the Deer Whistles you see in JP Cycle or anywhere else actually work? :icon_eek:

xxxflhrci 08-24-2010 05:43 PM

I have worked many deer/auto crashes where the vehicle had a deer whistle. I have hit a deer on a motorcycle equipped with a deer whistle. In my experience, the answer is "No".

highwayman1224 08-24-2010 05:51 PM

Don't waste ur money.

RandyDowdy 08-24-2010 05:58 PM

They DO work, but in the opposite direction. If a deer is crossing in front of you, and the whistle gets their attention, they will STOP in the road and watch as you hit them.

Don't dare put em on.

smitty901 08-24-2010 06:04 PM

NO they do not I live in deer country Wisconsin State and many others have proven over and over they do nothing.
Neither do loud pipes. Speed and tine of day/night you chose to drive are biggest factors

n8dc 08-24-2010 06:15 PM

I have them on my bike and I still couldn't tell ya if they work or not :)

Alabamaslammer 08-24-2010 06:32 PM

NO!!!!!!!!!!! Had them on my Peterbuilt and still hit one. Stupid thing ran right into me!

From my experience, they work great... they scare every deer out of the ditch to run right in front of you. The only 2 deer I have ever hit was when I had a deer whistle on my truck...

binkman78 08-24-2010 06:39 PM

My Rineharts/Rivco air horns do :icon_beerchug:

Wassup8687 08-24-2010 07:31 PM

I've heard some say they do and others say they don't. Those that say they do were talking about the electric ones not the plastic ones that need to have air pushed through at a certain speed.

scooter 7 08-24-2010 08:38 PM

I have an Electronic deer system and have not had a Deer or Dog break the beam yet.

handsomeboy1 08-24-2010 09:34 PM

Deer whistles

Anyone use these when riding? Wondering if they work. Thanks gents.

DavisFtW 08-24-2010 09:37 PM

de ja vue

see pg 2 under deer. If they worked i would use them for hunting

Pass Rider 08-24-2010 10:35 PM

If you do an internet search for "deer whistle effectiveness" you'll find that all the manufacturers claim they work, but when scientists study how effective they are, the results don't support the claims.

Try this site.

It summarizes some of the research.

slhanks4 08-24-2010 11:33 PM

I've never hit a deer in 35 years of driving/riding, and I've never driven any vehicle with a deer whistle on it.

Dalbergia 08-24-2010 11:42 PM

Just buy a hunting license with a deer tag, you won't see many deer the year you do...

DZLDR 08-24-2010 11:50 PM

Man, I swear by them deer whistles!:icon_boat:
Got a set of them on my boat and haven't hit a deer yet!
They must work! (eyeroll)

mike5511 08-25-2010 12:01 AM

Only in your mind........................

Other Sheep 08-25-2010 01:05 AM

They work great if you're going about 18mph and they hear your pipes. You'll love how they scatter like crazy to get out of your way.

Other Sheep 08-25-2010 01:42 AM

Two deer whistle posts so close together? Isn't there anything else to ask about?

:icon_laugh:

I thought Deer were only allowed to cross at the deer crossing signs :icon_laugh:

todd-67 08-25-2010 05:03 AM

I would save your money.

Saved Sinner 08-25-2010 05:33 AM

I still say they need to crossbreed deer with weiner dogs then they would run under your bike instead of through it!!!!!!!!!

Yes they do work - just as well as the gremlin bells

DuraGlide 08-25-2010 08:53 AM

Sure they work. Deer will wander right out in the middle of the road to see where the noise is coming from.

jmorganroadglide 08-25-2010 09:11 AM

Deer to me appear to follow a leader. If the leader is to the left of the road, then the followers will almost always run to that side of the road when spooked. If this is what others have experienced, then deer whistles don't work. They will stick with the herd at almost any cost. This post could be total BS. It is based on conclusions based on personal observations.

Leftcoaster 08-25-2010 09:32 AM

Those things will work great just as soon as someone goes out and trains all those little deers to run AWAY from the noise. Until that happens don't waste any money on 'em.

CruzN 08-25-2010 09:42 AM

I have read may reviews on those whistles, the wind powered ones that comes in pairs don't work. I have read the electronic ones ( electric power not wind ) does work.

Maybe we could write Myth Busters for confirmation.

swaite 08-25-2010 10:17 AM

not that i have seen

don't know about a whistle...but an arrow through both lungs seems to work pretty well.....:)

TitoFTW 08-25-2010 10:36 AM

Nope!

BLMC 08-25-2010 11:51 AM

All the deer that I have almost hit (and I mean close enough that I have heard their rear hooves scrape the road) , plus the one deer that I did hit; have all been deer that were startled and running to get away from danger. The deer that weren't afraid and have just stood where they were until I passed have been no problem.

I choose not to add to the number of startled deer by having deer whistles on my bike. Years ago I had them on my truck and I still hit them.

justjohn 08-25-2010 01:10 PM

I had them on two bikes and never hit a deer, so they work!!!

No, they are worthless

Foodog 08-25-2010 01:29 PM

Don't know about deer but I have not had one hippopotamus run out in front of me since I put the whistles on. If you're afraid of hitting a hippopotamus then I'll say these things will keep them away.

fxdx-fly-by 08-25-2010 01:32 PM

nope sure dont...whats with the animal avatars? about everyone one this page has one..

sucherman 08-25-2010 01:50 PM

NO ! BUT YELLING DOES ! Hey, fly-by, we're all animals.

NY_Ken 08-25-2010 02:03 PM

Yes they Do work!

They do work from my experience! One night after leaving my favorite watering hole I noticed a whole herd following me. When I got home, I told my wife about it, she went and looked at my bike and said " yup, you put the whistles on backwards too! Then she was mean to me and called me a few names I can't repeat here. BUT you can figure it out. The story of my life! Go figure!

Ken

oldairboater 08-25-2010 02:38 PM

Yeah they work after you put the front wheel and the deer whistle up the deers butt doing about 70 mph. That deer never gets in the road again after clean up.
