I get about 43 mpg w/my 06 Fat Boy. It went up considerably after my 1000 mile check-up and has stayed consistent since.

It's probably easy, but how are you guys computing?

I'd think you run the gas down to a particular mark, maybe 1/4 tank line.
Fill to full (record amount).
Run down exactly to that mark again (record miles).. calculate the MPG.

.. correct?

The rough measurement of miles vs amount to refill is what I use. I fill it to the same visual level everytime, so the amount of error possible is not significant to me.

Mine gets about 45 mpg. I just check the miles since the last fill-up and divide by the amount of gas it takes to refill to the exact same spot. I usually get gas after around 180 miles, it usually takes 3.9 to 4 gallons.

Where did I read that I'm supposed to be getting 54mpg with my '03 Fat Boy?

Fill the tank completely (Pay attention to what you use to determine that it is full). Set the trip meter to 0. Ride though at least half a tank. More is better since it will increase the accuracy. Next time you fill up (using the same determination to determine when i is full) record both the miles traveled using the trip meter and the gallons used to fille the tank. Divid the miles traveled by the gallons used to fill it up and you will get the mileage. No need to ride to a certain tank level since doing so will only add error to the calculation. If for instance you travel 197 miles and use 4.3 gallons you will divide 197 by 4.3 which would give you 45.8 MPG. Note though that this will only get you as close as the accuracy of the speedometer. For most of us this ill be aroud 3% higher than the actually MPG since that appears to be about how far off our speedometers are. If you want it to be as accurate as possible you will need ot find out how close this figure is and then multiply it by that figure as well. Mine is somewhere around 5% off so I would take the 45.8 and multiply it by 95% to get 43.51 MPG however very few people will actually calculate in this figure so comparing with others here I would not do so.
