The buckles on my softail bags wouldn't need any modification to be a belt buckle, other than taking off the plastic clip and leather strap. To test this, I just put one of mine on a belt and buckled it - worked fine. They look almost like the ones in the first pic, but with a different logo in the little round part.

It actually made a good looking belt buckle - I may do the same as you.
