I got a noob question
Hi, Im new as you can see. I got a question. What is the true power difference between a Sportster 883 and the Sportster 1200? Is the 1200 alot more powerful, or just a little? I was wondering because I was thinking about getting one someday. Not that it matters but I am 6 ft and 230lbs. Will the 883 slow me down.

RE: I got a noob question
MT: Welcome to the forum from a Nevada gun nut. I second panhead's opinion. I am 230 lbs. too and thought 'what the heck, I'm not racing anymore, what do I need a 1200 for?' I purchased my XL 1200 R six months after purchasing my XL 883 C. The drivability and response factor through freeway traffic is much safer and faster with the 1200. The fun factor is 10 time greater. Go for the 1200 and just don't get on the throttle to the max for a few months. ............. BC

Had a 883 and wished every time I rode it the it was a 1200. Felt like it was going to fall apart at any speed above 60.

Heritage: I have looked at your signature picture several times and have really looked over your bike. All I can say is that IMHO you have one of the best looking bikes on the forum. It is very tastefully done. You did good! ............... BC

Welcome to the forum MtGunNut, I'm not trying to slam Sportsters but have you considered looking at Softails or Dyna's as well? Maybe check out the rental program at the dealership and try some different bikes before deciding which bike is for you. Good luck.

I agree 100% with you Firemankrug!
I also am not dissin Sportsters ( look at my sig ) I own one! However, please please please, do yourself a favor and ride a dyna or softtail before you decide. I know it may be all you can afford and if thats the case save some more and step up to a larger bike. Your body will thank you for it. Sportsters are rough and vibrate a lot even w/ the rubber mounted engine. I fully believe that The Sportster Is Harleys Bait to get you hooked ...then reel you in on the dyna/softtail/tourer. I mean how many Sportsters do you see at dealerships that are used w/ less than 2k on them? They are there for a reason. If after all this your still dead set on a Sportster get a 1200. I like the looks of the 1200 Lows.

Took a friend's 883 for a ride and it felt like stepping back in time to when I owned a Triumph 750 Bonneville, fun as heck to ride but I didn't like taking it out on the highway,it would be ok,but not my preference.Haven't tried a 1200,but I'd guess it would take care of business out there well enough.
All that said....at 6' 3" and 230 Lbs you may want to check out the Dyna Wide Glide....
