Would you buy a rental bike?

There is NO way I'd ride a rental bike the way I'd drive a rental car - that'd be crazy.
I rented a FLHsomething in San Antonio in 98, it had 2K miles on it. All was well at the start, then I lost the keys ( you do not have to keep the keys in the ignition of a FLHsomething). Got the tourpak jimmied in Fort Stockton at the locksmiths. Soon had to use a leatherman to get the ignition to work right in Rocksprings. And then it snowed and rained back to San Antonio. Bike was missing keys, bags and ignition was jimmied, whole thing was dirty as hell. They were not happy to see us back at SAHD and didn't even say "come again". But that bike ran real good.
Hey, I'm renting another bike in North Cacalaky in a couple of weeks, I'll send a report.
And edit, I would never intentionally abuse a rental. Another edit, plowed thru a flooded creek in Camp Wood TX, yell'd a loose bull off the road in Leakey. That HD plowed thru it all, good bike.

Not really. I figured that they wouldn't be a good buy but I was curious as to if they were pretty much in the same category as rental cars, avoid like the plague.

Well, we bought a rental bike. 2008 EG, great bike, low miles, great price. No problems since we bought it in 2009. Just routine maintenance and everything is working fine. I know some people beat up rentals, but that's not always true. If it's been beat, you can usually tell. Listen to the engine, look it over real good. Ride it and shift it. We got a good warranty on it (three years) and all maintenance records. Runs like a locomotive, I love that bike! Before that we had an old Police Special Road King, everyone said that would be a problem because all of the abuse the cops do. Ended up with one issue, the Y-pipe under the seat kept leaking (known RK issue), we had it replaced and no problems after that. I think these bikes just need a little love.

I bought a rental and I'm glad I did.The price was right...all the service was up to date and there was a year left on the factory warranty. I don't think that the kind of people that would rent an Ultra Classic would be trashing it either.
