When I first got my current bike I checked it and it was 42 up to 45 on a good day. I generally get gas from a Marathon. 150 miles on the B mode of the odometer and it's time. I had a stock 96 that would get closer to 50. I don't care, as long as the bike is running right. When MPG differences between 42 and 50 matter, it's time for a new hobby.

Winter blend fuels, and cold enrichment will cost you 2-4 mpg. Ethynol will cost you 2-5 mpg. I am able to buy pure gas premium in my home town and can get 51mpg with my windshield on and solo riding. If I have to use ethynol gas mpg will drp to 46 mpg and to 44mpg with windshield removed. Fuel brand and quality of fuel can effect ir even more. Whe choice of ethynol fuel, I have the best results with Shell, Citgo, Sunoco, Chevron and Exxon in that order. BP mpg is all over the place.

Yep. The idea to reduce emissions is to force everybody to burn more fuel.

What's not to like ?

its natural for any engine to burn more fuel in cooler temps. add in the ethanol %, the winter blending of fuel to appease the tree huggers and your mpg goes in the toilet.

Well dang it. I think you need to give me one so I can ride it around for a very long time and I will try to figure it out for ya. But it might take 10 to 20 years.

Compression, cams, timing and air temp are causes of engine knock. There is no way I would run anything but 93 octane in either of my motorcycles with their set ups. A lot of people can and do run mid or low octane range gas and get away with it. Being around engines and hot engines all my life has taught me a healthy respect for good high grade gas and good oil. Your motorcycle, run what you want but I wouldn't ever recommend nothing less than 91 octane on any stock Harley.

Least that is how it works for me

I get around 45 overall. Always use premium, 93 if I can find it 91 if I can't.

I run 85 octane - regular here in Wyoming - most of the time. About once a month (so every fourth or fifth tank) I run over to the only local place I know of with pure gas (http://pure-gas.org/) and run a tank of 91. Never noticed any pinging - I'd step up the octane right away if I did - but use Seafoam once a month, too. It's a bone stock '07 XL883C.

I get between 40-45 most of the time, but I do a lot of city driving and am quick on the wick.

Same as most in here.. cooler/colder the weather is, down goes the mileage.
As with Ethanol gas, down she'll go..

Usually 44-47 in the summer,, 40-44 spring - fall.
