For that price I would pick up a used dyna all day. Although that's just me. The sportsters are nice and that is a pretty good deal.

That's a lotta cash for an 883. At your size, you will outgrow it very quickly.
For that kinda cheddar, you can get a Big Twin in nice shape used, which is what you will wanna trade up to anyway shortly after buying the 883. I'd wait. |
I've got an 04 1200C and an older 883, weigh 240; the 883 never felt quick to me, but the 1200 sure does. As far as comfort compared to big twins, I've sat on several big twins that felt cramped compared to my 1200. Just depends on the setup, so many different styles, seats, tanks, pegs, etc; you can change any Harley to fit you. As far as trading your sporty on a big twin later, yeah, I did get a big twin, but I'm keeping that 1200 too!

Forward Controls
Just got a '99 883 Sportster. Seemed like my knees were right up under my chin. Installed forward controls (from Custom Chrome) and it's a world of difference! Really comfortable now. Overall, 883 and 1200 are same size bikes. Same dimensions, same weight, same everything just bigger pistons.

The sportster are awesome bikes but for your size and weight you might want to check out the Dyna family. If you can't afford a new one I would look at some used Dynas.
I wouldn't know about the size thing, I'm 5'-8" 130 lb. Good luck on what ever bike you buy. Thanks, Rod |
Thanks for the input guys...I'm starting to think a street bob or wide glide is the way to go. I'll have to shop around a bit this week and hopefully have one by the weekend.

Now that spring's here there are lots of clean, low mileage big twins (and Sportster 1200's) showing up on Craigslist and Cycletrader. |
Hey Fields. I don't know if you are willing to drive to get a new bike or not but if you don't mind a short road trip I would suggest getting on cycletrader and looking for bikes. I just bought a new 2011 Nightster from a HD in Columbia Tennessee for only $8804. It was a brand new bike with warranty. Got the 1200 for only a few hundred more than the 883 that you mentioned. They actually had one more 2011 Nightster new for only $8500 but it was powder blue so is spent a bit more and got the two tone red and black. Just a little food for thought for you. Either way though, the Iron 883 is a real nice bike and with mini apes and forwards on it I'm sure you will fit fine. Best of luck to you getting a great deal. Welcome to the forum from Pensacola FL. Have fun, ride safe.
