Thoughts on this sportster deal...

Hi all, new to the forum. I've been looking at bikes for awhile now, I use to ride street bikes but want to switch over to a cruiser.

My local dealer offered me a 2013 iron 883 for $8500 including all fees and sales tax. Sounds like a great offer to me consider they charge 997 in freight and setup fees.

Other question, I'm 6'2" about 250lbs. I feel like I'm too big for a sportster but I love the style. Figured if I put forward controls and mini ape bars it will be more comfortable.

Thanks guys.

A sporty set up for a guy your size will be fine. Get forwards and mini apes. Maybe a extension for the controls.

Do you get a chance to ride it before making a decision?

I suggest you rent a bike or two before you decide. You will know right away if the setup is right for you and if the bike fits you. Lots of mods can be done to change how the bike feels and to make you more comfortable. A demo ride is the least that will help you. A half or full day rental will help you more to make your decision. If you think a rental is expensive, you have to consider that you will be spending a lot of time in that saddle. Good luck.

I had an 883 and i felt like i was riding a moped. I am shorter and lighter then you. You may like the look and the price now, but if you are serious about Harley motorcycles, you will be looking to upgrade within a few months. Save up and get a big twin if you can.

I'm your size and had an XL883C and felt comfortable on it. It was a little small, but not too terribly bad. I did want a bigger bike though.

The sportster are awesome bikes but for your size and weight you might want to check out the Dyna family. If you can't afford a new one I would look at some used Dynas.

+ 1 -
I am 6'3" and 250, have a 1200C - added the progressive 412 13" shocks, and Sundowner seat and can ride all day long.

That's a lotta cash for an 883. At your size, you will outgrow it very quickly.

For that kinda cheddar, you can get a Big Twin in nice shape used, which is what you will wanna trade up to anyway shortly after buying the 883. I'd wait.
