Show Me Your Harley and Your Tent!
I've had a couple of good tents so I'll start. Here's my old "touring" softail with a Cabela's XPG 4-man in the first picture and my Tarptent in the next one. I would love to see other setups -- anybody?

OK... stupid question from someone who has never tent camped from my bike but how do you haul the tent? Do they pack up very small? I saw one pulling a trailer but short of that option how do you pack all your stuff on the bike without having an ultra? Just curious how small it pack.
Thanks |

Not a stupid question. I've done a little backpacking, where pack size and weight are crucial, so I'm real particular about my gear. Tents range in packed size. For example, my tarptent (above) is really a 1-man tent, but packs up to about the size of a 1 liter bottle. The other tent I use is a 3-man and it packs up to about 6X20" (takes up approx half of a Street Glide saddlebag with plenty of room for my sleeping bag).

Here's a pic of my 3-man tent in the bottom of a '14 SG saddlebag. The second pic shows my sleeping bag (in a compression sack) and inflatable mattress on top of the tent.

Would love to get into tent camping with the bike. Have a street glide. Anyone point me to a good site for more information or tents to check out? I would never have guessed they packed that small. If I could get a tent and sleeping back in one saddlebag it would be an option.
Thanks for the help. lbs. REI, Back Country, Sunnyside, are also good places to look. |

In Arizona, about to take a week long trip to Zion in Utah. I started the day before in Calimesa California. The stuff sack on top it's my sleeping bag, the roll is my tent rolled up in my sleeping pad.

Definitely some great shots. Menasha Ridge Press has a "Best in Tent Camping" series that would work very for motorcycle campers. Here's a link to the newly revised Virginia guide, written by yours truly, and hot off the presses....

I bet I've got the oldest tent still in use. Here's a picture from last summer when a fellow PGR ride captain had a campout for his wedding. The green tent on the left is from Wards, purchased in the mid 70's, which I've traveled with all over the country for over 4 decades. My Ultra is the one in the foreground on the right.
The second pic is of our '91 Bunkhouse camper, and my lovely lady enjoying a quiet afternoon. |

Thanks If you are traveling alone, one of the best ways is to roll out your sleeping bag, fold it over lengthwise on itself, and roll the tent up inside the sleeping bag. Strap the whole works on your back seat and you will have the most comfortable backrest you've ever used! You can stuff the whole thing into a standard size garbage bag, and now it's waterproof! On my very first trip in 1972, I can still remember swiping a new garbage bag out of a garbage can at Big Bend National Park in Texas. |
This was in Montana on a cross country tour a few years back.

I love camping off my bike. I even have a pintrest page on it. 1 pic from our honeymoon at sturgis at the broken spoke campground ( that is a rei half dome 4) packed on back of our bikes. The other pic is from oc bike week. The tent is an REI kingdom 8 with a garage and it also goes on the bikes.

would love to get into motorcycle camping... keeping an eye on this thread.

Sturgis, 2008 at Lamphere Campground. It rained a bit that first evening.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps81af1a99.jpg I've done quite a bit of camping off the bike, it's easier with the Road Glide than the Super Glide, obviously because it's set up to haul more. I did Sturgis one year on my old Wide Glide, so it can be done on a Dyna. Even on the WG, I was able to haul a 3 man tent, queen size air mattress (& pump), sleeping bag, leathers, and 3 days worth of clothes. A T-Bag really helps out if you don't have a bike with a Tour Pak. Like others have already said, backpacking gear is your friend, though you don't necessarily need the high buck, super light stuff. I've really never camped anywhere I needed to haul food or cooking gear. |

Care to share the name of the tent? That looks like the clear deal to keep the dew off the bike when tenting.
Website: http://redverz.com Packs up to 9" x 21" - here it is on the Sturgis, right behind the banjo. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps3f03c806.jpg |

Softail camping
I've made numerous camping trips on my '05 Softail and '07 Softail. Here's a pic of what I call my "hillbilly pack" -- includes a bedroll, 2-man tent, groundcloth, folding chair. The big T-bag provides a perfect backrest for long rides.

Still perfecting my setup, but here is the bike packed up. I carry a hiking pole, because I use a solo ultralight tent from Six Moon Designs. (I'll get a picture soon)

So, I'm just wondering who will be the first one to start a "you're not a real camper" thread! LOL!!! :D:D:D
Great pics everybody! I used to do a lot of camping. Seeing your pics is giving me the itch to load the bike and head out. |

Like others have said, dont buy a cheap tent, you will be sorry the first rainy night sleeping in a puddle. http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1675ee48.jpg |
