A shovel don't need a brain to be thrown off a bridge into highway traffic, that is one of the troubles with shovels.

Shovels are not specifically made to be thrown. Guns though are made specifically for a single purpose, to shoot bullets.

Yes, but using the common sense portion of it is highly recommended.

true, but not made to be fired into the air during a celebration. Point is blaming the tool for improper use of its operator is silly as blaming a shovel for being thrown off a bridge at passing motorist.

Watched a show where they fired a number of calibers in the air and measured impacts. Their findings - very few calibers fall fast enough to penetrate when they're terminal velocity straight down. Put just a little angle on them, and it's a whole different story, bullet has to lose all forward speed before it slows to terminal velocity, and with just a little forward motion, it can easily kill you. The folks that get hit/killed by falling bullets are usually well off to the side, including the bike hit in the tourpack, so those shots were fired at some angle and hit well above terminal velocity. Doesn't make it any less stupid to just fire a gun in the air, though.
